Not a STI to S2000 owner, owned both at same time. Unloaded the 04 STI for a more suitable daily driver (mazdaspeed 6), and unloaded my 01 S2K for an 06.

I will never understand 4 door sedans like the STI as a fun sports car, the way some people buy them. I bought that baby to use, abuse, barrel through the snow, and drive into the ground, all while having a super fast car that handled great. It just got too much attention as a daily, and it was loud and bumpy (softened suspension and quieted up more now, I had the pure raw 04 model), so now the Speed 6 is used as a luxury beater that's fast and actually pretty fun for a big car.

The STI is a perfect year round car, and the S2000 is a true sports car.

and who is doing 2jz swaps now anyways? I thought they only did that like twice and it fell apart.
AND they converted it to an automatic that required slap shifting technique....difficult to master.

Thanks guys for all the posts, I'm really really about to get an s2000, I'll post pictures soon - hard part is getting rid of the STi first. Then picking a color for the s2000 - so tough!

hmm swapped s2k, so how much would a 2jz swap be and what kind of down time would I expect, I'd like to do a lot of road trips with the s2000 - I know it sound funny but cruising up and down the coast with the top down is my idea of fun!

I had both an STI and an S2000 and the S2000 was honestly much more fun.

The STI definitely had the torque, practicality and AWD going for it, but everything else was better about the S2000, IMO.

Now I am driving a Fit to save up for an 06 Laguna Blue S2000

i did not own an STi but a base rex. Got my S 3-4mths ago. Still love the surge of the turbo.

Handling wise, i love the confident of the Rex. With minor mods, you extract a lot more power. Lotsa resale performance parts here though and easy access. Maybe not in the States. Downshift, blip, turn into apex and WOT and shift up! Woohoo, confident easy without fear of losing the tail. Twisty road is also great!

However, maintenance is a mess. Hard to access parts especially if you are changing your own oil every 5000km. Not to mention spark plugs! Damn, its tight UTH. Monster easily.

But I also love the S! Great turner car! But honestly, i got a lot more looks over my Rex esp kids whom recognise it as a fast car, a rally car, maybe one that spits fire! Wahaha..

I guess now the S get more attention from the adult becoz of the low rider. Handling wise, sharper nonetheless, but more wary since i spun once. I'm always ready to react this day powering into a corner. More cautious. Trail braking is no longer my fav. But when the growl and howl from the CAI sounded, my adrenalin pumps! I won't stop the VTEC until 5th gear then I slow down again..

So the verdict?? Both are my fav.. Keep both if possble.

I agree. I guess it depends though. If you wanna compare them as sports cars, the S2000, even being far slower, is more fun to drive. Helps that it's much nicer looking too. However, you really can't beat the STI for a combination car with utility, espcially tne new hatchback. It really is quite a special vehicle.

The only thing I didn't like if viewing it as a sports car was the looks. Why can't Subaru make a sexy sports coupe with 300+hp, and AWD?

In my perfect world, my S2000 would be a retractable hardtop, with the STI engine and AWD drivetrain so I can have it as my one and only car. Oh well, I still love it so much, and I wouldn't want the S2000 to be that way.

Perhaps the Mazdaspeed Miata coming out will be something special. That 2.3 disi engine in the speed 3 and 6, mounted to a Miata with 250+hp and torque to me sounds like Heaven. I imagine my Speed 6 800lbs lighter, and the thought of it is downright scary, because it's already a bit faster then my S2000 as is. If it's nice enough, I could make the switch. We shall see!!!!

Maybe we can clamor Audi:

Make an RS5 quattro hardtop convertible

Or a convertible R8

but $30,000 so i can afford it

A lot of people want to know the answer to this. I guess, you know, different tastes; apparently the company prefers "quirky"-looking designs.

There is also some limitations on chassis design because of the way the trans/AWD system works. There is a very long front overhang, as the boxer motor's block sits in front of the strut towers and the front axles come out of the transmission. They're quite nose-heavy.

I think the Legacy GT is not a bad-looking car, if the just made a nice trimmed-up version in 2-door with the 300 hp turbo motor... Hell, even Toyota makes a 2-door Camry.

The S is not that slow compared to a (stock/stockish) Evo. On anything other than a straight road, the S will hang with (lag behind then catchup in the corners) the Evo, or if in front, make it very difficult to pass. I am the loan S driver amongst a bunch of Evo/Sti drivers here. When we do the mountain road thing, they are shocked that I am always there with them. One guy with a fairly souped up Evo (so much so he believes he does not need a rear view mirror), when he saw the video of the run with me right in his arse said it was a good thing he had no mirror else he would have crashed his car trying to lose me
show me a stock Evo then I'll believe you. Mtn Runs different, that's all about driving.

like dragon.
