Default Freaking rust...

Ugh. Anyone else noticing rust as our cars age? My my2000 is pretty immaculate and usually garaged, but with 86,000+ miles and 15 years of driving, I'm finding the slightest bits of rust. I'm not talking body or chassis rust (it was never really driven in the winter when I lived further north, and I don't live close enough to the beach now for salty air), but random bolts/washers in the engine bay, the hood latch, under the body where the jack points are, maybe a tiny spot on the edge of the door where paint chipped, etc. I've fixed most of it as best I can. It's just frustrating... you'd think we'd utilize different metals or technologies to better prevent it!

That's weird. I live like 10 minutes away from the beach here in SoCal and do not have any rust. Mines a MY00 also.

This is why I clear coated all my non-service bolts and undercoated my entire chassis while everything was still silver on my 01' You can R&R all of them

We do, but aluminum and carbon are very expensive. I'd expect rust on bolts and other rough surfaces. Bet your car is fine.

Wanna bet that my AR has more rust?
Does it snow in Kentucky(I live in Miami, I wouldn't know)
And do they put salt down?

There was enough rust, that the bolts for the air compressor shield were one with the chassis and shield. It was able to be ripped right off with no effort.

we have a product in Canada called Rust Check. It comes in a can and I spray all the seams, bolts, etc underneath every so often. It is really great stuff available at Canadian Tire and if you're going to the RTD dragon trip, i'll pick you up a can or two. usually costs about $10/can at regular price.

You can paint bolt heads, just get some cheap over the counter touch up paint in any colour you like - silver, gold, red, etc. - and brush it on and it works like a charm. Rubberized rocker guard works good for under the vehicle, Honda touch up paint for paint chips.

That is bit odd! I have been using a MY2006 as winter car in Minnesota for the past 8 years. There is bit of rust on the control arms; but, nothing alarming. Similar rusting may be found if driven in rain on a regular basis. I do wash the underside every week (during winter) and park in heated underground parking. The tech who works on the car says it is clean; and, wouldn't have believed it is driven in winter if I haven't told him.

As Mark355 said, you should be just fine.

It is definitely minor on my car and already taken care of... it's just a bit annoying. Thanks for the replies and tips everyone.

And aviator - an S2000 driven through Minnesota winters? Preserve it as best you can! Sounds like you already are.
