If you are driving through another State and don't have a front plate, which is not required in your State, you can not be legally cited for it. If you've moved there and haven't bothered to change your registration, that is another matter all together. I would fight that ticket all the way. You have the federal right to travel in the U.S.

The air intake would have little to do with the operation of the radiator. Just because intake air comes from somewhere else, does not mean you don't have to worry about cooling the engine.

I think front plates are ugly on the S. No matter where it's mounted. I really don't want to put it on.

It is a $75 ticket in Illinois. Thankfully I have not had a problem so far (Knock on wood.)

Not all states have front plates.

Reasons for front plates:
1. It's a great front target for laser speed detection.
2. Supposedly it makes it harder to steal plates off of a a car.
3. While cops would normally nab you from behind, they feel the need to have an identifier on the front of a car for oncoming passes.

I'm thinking that with some minor trimming and creative placement you could decrease the impact of the plate on the front. There's at least 1/4" around the plate that should be OK to trim, most people cover it with their plate frames anyway. Then, slide most of the unused top portion of the plate behind the bumper. Here's a Photochop rendering:

Trimming the plate has to be illegal or there'd be lots of people doing it. I don't agree that plates should be on the grill. Here's why:

In Australia the law used to be that speed cameras could only shott you from behind, however this was recently changed.
They can shoot you from both directions now.

s2ka - that is about the size of one of our alternative number plates where I live. That is the type of plate I have. It is mounted just above the front air intake.

Mine's trimmed a little on top and bottom, then I put black duct tape around the edge to prevent it from scratching anything. It's zip-tied into place. Since the fans and the thermostat regulate temperature, overheating isn't a concern.
