Just over-rev'd my engine - mis-shifted from 6 to 2 instead of 4...

The tires chirped (major slow down), but I punched the clutch in as quickly as possible - was going around 75 or 85 or so.

The car seems fine (so far), I don't know how much it over-rev'd.

I am worried, should I bring it to the dealer to get it checked???

Fudge!!!! After reading all the warning on this board, I screw it up

Any advice on what I should look for?

Thanks,

No, you should be OK, if you float a valve, you know it right away. I wouldn't bother taking it in unless you feel something funny going on.

Just be more careful next time.

BTW, I downshift into second going about 70-75 on the track and as as long as you are slowing down, it's not a problem.

I'm sure you're OK...don't worry.

Wow these over-revved downshifts are spreading like a virus!

It looks like you were able to recover and punch the clutch in time. And sounds like the car is running fine. If there was any resulting damage I'm sure the car wouldn't be able to start up again!

IMO, you had a close call. If you don't notice anything unusual while the car is running I would say you're OK.

Is it that easy to go from 6th to 2nd at that high rate of speed? Is there more of a chance not to make an error if you put it in 5th first(without relasing the clutch) and then putting it in 4th????

Any comments.

If you are breaking down from 80 or so and you go to 2nd it's ok. You are on the brakes and the weight is forward and the tires break traction to slow down. But if you are not on the brakes hard you could do some serious damage. If you were in 6th at 75 and downshifted to pass or accelerate it's a totally different bag of mass.

But it sounds like you got away with it due to the chirp.

You get into this problem by jamming the shifter. Shame on you! If you let the shifter move its own way and be gentle it shouldn't happen.

on another thread some time ago, someone mentioned putting shifter in neutral position and letting it center itself, then up is third, down is fourth. I have been doing it this way for some time now and it works pretty well.

You are probably in good shape considering what happened if your car is still running fine.

Seriously though, you have to make a effort to be precise when downshifting.

I have missed a gear once in my stook and it was during casual driving. However I shift much more cautisouly when at looking to downshift into a VTEC!

Good luck and just dont let it happen again!
