Future of the S2000?

That's not conjecture. It's rubbish.
The 2000 refers to the capacity and is a direct lead on from the S360, S500, S600 and S800.

I should have been more careful and separate thoughts better for the super-uptight.
Yes, S2000 refers to capacity... or at least it had historically.
The point was... previously with each iteration Honda changed the name and the CAR with each change in engine. Hence the S360, S500, S600, and S800.
The S2000 did NOT become the S2200 in 2004.
Why? This is the conjecture part. Call it rubbish if you will.
The conjecture is:
S2000 was designed to commemorate the 50th anniversary. Its launch was not planned randomly.
Was not ever designed to grow displacement.
JDM retains the 2.0L engine.
USDM grew to 2.2L, as an afterthought. Worked well in the US per the reviews, but more of a band-aid than a major overhaul (hence retaining the S2000 moniker).
So to review: Planned launch. Done in 2000. Honda picked a name that traditionally limits them from growing the engine... although they strayed from convention for the USDM.
Conjecture: if they had planned growth and evolution of the model, they would have kept to alphabetical designations.... crx, nsx, rsx, tl, rl... in order to keep the model recognition while overhauling the model. Makes me think they didn't plan on ever evolving the line much.
with cbanks and hensonbear. This car is specialised, built by an enthusiastic and professional company for enthusiasts to enjoy, and is going to be around for a good time yet. It's a shame the Honda service networks don't seem quite up to the job though (its a similar story here in the UK) but maybe, when there are enough cars about, some "specialists" will set up?
Its also good IMO that the numbers are not too high. I don't want to spoil anyone elses fun but it adds something to the ownership experience in that there are not that many about. I only see another S2000 on the roads every couple of weeks or so. By comparison Boxsters and Z's I see daily almost everywhere.
Then, to talk of Honda's original sports cars, I nearly bought an S800 in the early 70's (but I couldn't afford it then
). I still would like one now if I just had the cash and the room to start a collection off. Its not a car I'd buy to commute in, pick up shopping in, transport my family about in, or drive on a motorway in. I'd just drive it to have fun and to hell with any faster cars (they may not be come the corners
). That's exactly how some people are going to feel about the S2000 in years to come I'll bet. Thank you Honda for a great car

Just to add more fuel to the fire a recent Wheels Magazine (Australian) stated that Honda had canned plans for the new NSX (HSC) and instead were intent on developing the new S2000 as a 'Boxster beater'.
Of course how much of this is conjecture and inference or just plain bullsh!t will only be revealed with time.

Dude, chill.
The S2000 was released in 1999. It was named S2000 in line with Honda's traditional sports car line and the capacity of it's engine. It wasn't renamed S2200 for the USDM 04 model because the capacity was only increased to counter the US obesity problem.

As for Neons beating S2000s that's just stupid. There have always been cars that will 'beat' the S2000 for half the price. All you have to do is have a really narrow idea of what performance is. I mean, the Neon may be quicker to 60 and in the quarter, but does it handle? Is it fun to drive? Is it convertible? Will it last more than 2 years?

I'll def have another upgraded car in 2 years when I'm settled in with my MBA anf start my career.
s2k to compete in a few years is going to have another engine makeover and this time it would cost millions way more than it did for the lil 2.2 bump which still makes the performance times the same as the 2.0. That will take millions and millions which will push the price up and s2k will lose that bang for the buck. I can't ever see Honda using V6s for some reason, I dunno why they won't.
Dont see it happening plus the s2k isn't a money maker.
