I keep a hat in the car... I put it over the shifter so I can touch it on a hot day (when I leave the top down)....

Trees are bad, I should note... I parked my car under a tree to keep it cool and ended up cleaning the seats up from one of the friendly birds that occupied the tree.

Yeah...the TX heat has turned my shift knob into a branding iron as well

I bought Rick's knob sock a few weeks back to save my hand a few layers of skin. At first, I was leaving the knob sock on the knob while it was parked, but that doesn't keep the knob from getting hot....what I ended up doing is keeping the knob sock in the web pocket on the passenger side, and put it on the knob when I get back in the car & just drive with it on there for a little while until the knob cools down....may not be the way it was intended to be used, but it saves my flesh!

Its not JUST the shift knob....The leather is burns your ass when you sit down, the door & center console burn your arms, the wheel burns your left hand, the metal part of the seatbelt burns the sh#t out of you if you grab it while putting it on........Does anyone have one of the sunshades? Is it a pain in the ass? Annoying to deal with?

I bought a cockpit cover and put it on when I park the car outside for a long time. It completely covers the cockpit of the car and doesn't let any sun in. When you get back to the car, it's pretty cool inside.

I second the cockpit cover from Rob @TopNotch. I debated over getting one because some of the opinions here was that it was kind of a pain to use. I put it on and take it off at least 3 times per day. (Off in morning, on when I get to work, off at lunch, back on after lunch, off to go home, and back on when I get home.) I have been using it for about 3 or 4 weeks now, and can put it on in about 1-1.5 minutes and off in less than 30 seconds. Not a pain at all for me...

It allows me to keep the top down and boot cover on, and the interior stays clean and relatively cool. My ti knob does not get nearly as hot since I started using it.

It is available in a number of different colors and fabrics (and prices), I got the grey Technalon one for 60-65 shipped with the member discount.

I actually put on the Honda cover when I park the car. Yes, it is a bit of a pain, but for the UV protection alone, it is worth it. It takes maybe five minutes to put on or take off. I just get to work a little late and leave a little early. Plus, it keeps the dust off and saves me from having to wash the car every couple of days.

Food for thought:

I use carnuba wax on the car and understand that it kind of melts off at high heat. Not literally running down the car, but you get the idea.

We have more than 300 days of sun in Colorado and it is quite intense at 5280ft. As others have mentioned the plastic painted parts tend to fade when exposed to the sun for extended periods of time. I can take ten minutes out of my day to defend against that.

Oh, I should mention that for the most part, I leave the top down on the car unless I am washing it. The cover fits pretty well and I feel comfortable leaving it on in a stiff breeze.
