I to have bought a lot off E-Bay, but most of that happened a couple of years ago. Its true, very few people get taken on E-Bay, but you here more and more every day. I would be very careful buying from an on line auction. Check the seller out before you bid. I don't think E-Bay can do very much for you except stop the seller from selling again.

I've noticed for awhile that Ebay is basically a place where merchants hawk their wares and not for a really decent price. I hardly find non-merchant auctions where hopefully you can get a good deal on a used item. And sometimes if I do, and it sounds too good to be true, I don't bid. I've actually found great deals (even better than Ebay) looking elsewhere.

i agree, ebay has gotten to the point where there are a lot of real dealers selling their stuff for only slightly less then their current web prices!

I doubt you can stop payment on a check that has already been posted to a Canadian bank.

do to the T.I.T.S thread and post...look for a member of TITS from the area the perp lives in, but you need to get some info like email address, name ....get the info from your bank. If he cashed the check or deposited it, then you have a name and address right there. Help the TITS guys and they'll help you.

Just to give you guys some background I'm a programmer for an online check processing company here in Austin. We deal with situations like the one described all the time. While the government may eventually begin to regulate online sales a little more, you must realize that it is in businesses best interest to really get involved with fraud. There are already governing bodies when it comes to the actual transfer of money between banks (writing checks) and they do provide you with some fraud protection. If you can't resolve the issues with ebay, you can always call your bank and tell them what happened. People are not as annonymous as you might think. If you tell your bank what has happened, they will most likely refund your money and go after the person that sold you the product by following the paper trail. Funds were transfered from your bank to another bank, even if it was cashed. Don't worry you have 60 days to make claims of fraudulent activitiy on your bank account.

P.S. While banks do offer fraud protection, credit cards are the way to go when buying stuff online because it's much easier to do a chargeback then to deal with banks. Credit card companies are much more used to dealing with fraud both in personal and cyberspace transactions.

Thanks for the help you guys are giving, I have been dealing online for 7 years with hundreds of transactions, and never had a problem. I have only been using Ebay for about 6 months, and havent had a problem there either. I am not going to stop dealing online just because there is one deadbeat out of hundreds, but I will be more cautious next time. If there is a TITS member close to the perp, here is the address.

Check was dated 11/17/02, so it's been a month and 2 days, I am going to go to the bank tomorrow and see what kind of fraud protection they offer as well. I am sick and tired of waiting, and on top of all that, I have a hole cut in the center of my dash where the VAFC is going to go, and I think it would look a little better with the VAFC installed...

Don't count on any help from Ebay. You can't reach them on the telephone, and they have canned email responses to everything. In my opinion the Ebay organization subborns fraud by not doing anything to prevent it. They have no active protections in place for consumers, and the rating system is a bad joke.

I stopped doing any transactions on Ebay months ago precisely for this reason.
