hard putting into 1st or reverse
hi all...
just wondering... when i'm rolling like at around 6mph - 12 mph, my tranny doesn't want me to go into 1st gear...well not the tranny but the gearbox. its almost like there's a safety lock on 1st gear whenever i'm over 5mph... i usually just throw it into 2nd and go...which is very slow... just wondering if anyone else is having this problem???
oh and reverse is awfully hard to get into all the time whenever needed. i need to force it into reverse most of the time... it feels like i'm ripping the tranny up...but no sound is coming...any suggestions??
thanks all!!!

My 2002 model still has less than 1900 miles on it. Never noticed a problem downshifting into first at reasonable speeds, such as 8 mph or less - goes in very easily. This was not so true with the previous 3rd gen RX-7, where first at any speed above dead stop required a serious push.

No grinding ever going into reverse. I am always sure the wheels are not rolling before shifting into reverse. It does require a fairly deliberate motion, in order to avoid accidentally going into 6th!! Yes, I have stupidly done that once or twice.

Mine can be tough downshifting to 1st when cold. I find that if I put the car in reverse when I park it everything seems to be smoother then normal until the car warms up and then it's all good.
reverse takes some getting used to. I find if you push the know all the way to the right, and then push down on the knob it will make it easier to find reverse. If you push down in the knob in neutral it will make it a bit more difficult to find reverse.
It is hard for me to engage 2nd when my tranny is cold, but just have to shift slow until it warms up. Hopefully when the tranny has more use it will get even better.

cool...thanks guys...so reverse is tough for everyone...and 1st shouldn't be as hard as it is for me to get into...but then again, i have <1000 miles on the car so i'll wait a bit more and see...
thanks again guys...

In order to downshift into first when going speeds > 10 you must rev match. Just blip the throttle to where the engine wants to be and it'll slide into first like butter. For reverse, don't go directly into reverse put it into first then second then try reverse. It will go in much easier, Garaunteed!

By golly, you are right. Tried getting into reverse the way you suggested, and the feeling is much more positive, and no need to question whether I have accidentally shifted into 6th gear. Your avatar is extremely silly, but your advice is right on. Thanks.
