I think it's so that if you accidentally hit the "unlock" button when you meant to hit the "lock" button, see the lights flash, and walk away, then your car doesn't sit there unlocked all day long.
That's as good an explanation as any!

The auto lock function irritates me sometimes too. It least it doesn't do it when you leave the key in the ignition. I can't really figure out a way the auto lock function could cause you to lock the keys inside the car though. Seems to me you would either have the top down or the door would be open when you set the keys on the seat.

I must admit, though, the remote design leaves something to be desired. One time I had the remote in my pocket, doors locked, and the car would beep every time I took a step in the parking lot as the button would get pressed in my pocket.

I was thinking WTF is this POS doing until I realized what was happening.

Absolutely! Laughed out loud at myself once I realized what was going on.

I have had this happen to me on numerous occasions. Most common when I am wearing jeans, since the pockets are fairly 'tight', and motion will occasionally compress the locking button on the remote. If I am reasonably close to the garage, the locking will occur.

At my age (67), there's not a whole heck of a lot of motion going on in my pants, but it can still be enough to lock the doors.
