Default HELP: Clunk in Front suspension

Yep. I'm a noob. This could be the most common problem, and I wouldn't know about it.

2000 model with 51k. I've got a clunk coming from the Driver's front suspension. I took it to a friend's shop, and we put it on the lift only to find nothing. It' sounds like a metal on metal noise. I have no idea what the hell it is, but it happens sporadically on bumpy roads (slow speed), or over a pothole or bigger bump at driving speeds. Nothing on the highway. Car is generally tight, and hasn't been abused. Any thoughts? Much appreciated,

If you turn off your radio, can you hear it going 20-35mph?

yes. it's a noticable clunk. It almost sounds like the strut is bad and bottoming out....but I can't imagine that the strut is bad, as the car otherwise rides properly.

when on the rack, we took a pry-bar, and checked all of the linkage. None of the joints are bushings were shot, and nothing was loose. We took a transmission jack, and pushed up the tire to as to simulate the weight of the car on the road, and tested again. nothing. The entire suspension system is tight.

I'm getting the impression that this isn't a common problem...
