The shock sounds logical to me.
I had a big off at Hallet in my 944 and after that I too got a sharp clunking sound under similar conditions. I knew it was the shock. You can take the shocks off and take them to a raceshop with a shock dyno and have them checked out.
Or, this is your excuse to buy new coilovers.

Hi chris,
The suspension saga continues I see! (: I'm sure this will be little help but you did torque and tighten the top two nuts after you lowered the car right? I had a clunking for a while too, until I realized that I had tightened my shocks before lowering the car to the ground and loading pressure. Just a thought.

I found the suspension noise I had definately came from the right side of the car and was actually in the left suspension.. Look for noise transfer. Dealers have a little device that hooks up sensors to various underpinnings and they can hear the noise and find it using the device. Good luck..

Thanks for the observations. Actually my new shocks are not yet installed so this happened to the stock setup. You guys are right, I cannot tell where the sound is coming from.
After talking with a few people I have concluded that I may have damaged one of the shocks in my off course excursion so it now clunks when hot and worked hard. I cannot see any damage except for a scar on the inside of the wheel, but it may be more obvious when I pull them off.
The new shocks are custom Koni two-way adjustables machined to allow the placement of the stock spring perches using Koni clips so that I can lower the car and use the stock springs. This is a bit of an experiment to see if I can lower the CG a bit, retain a decent ride, and add dampening on track days.
