Help Guys!!!!
I just checked my engine oil level and it is 1 slot over Low. I only have 1250 miles on my car. Why is it consuming oil so fast??? Also, I am planning on start using Mobil 1 Tri-Synthetic oil. Is 10W-30 the best for S2K??? Also, how hard is it to change oil yourself???? I have never tried it before. Can someone please explain clearly on how to do it???? THANKS!!!
this has been discussed before... some use more than others. mine used more when it was younger, but seems to be slowing a bit. i run my hard- should use old-fashioned dinosaur oil for a while. 10-30 is fine. just make sure it has the detergent requirements that are discussed in the owners manual. your mileage sounds too low to change already-
Howdy MDS2K - don't freak out. Calmly add non-synthetic 10W-30 motor oil to your crankcase to fill it up. Complete the break-in procedure during the first 600-1000 miles. Change your oil, again to a non-synthetic brand of 10W-30 or 5W-30 (just to appease the new engine warrantee gods), at 3750 miles (or thereabouts). Religiously check your oil weekly and top up as necessary. Wait until the oil consumption decreases before switching to synthetic (usually the 3rd or 4th oil change). Did I forget anything? Oh yeah, there is a lot on this topic - use the search function for many more pieces of advice and explanations about the hows and whys of oil changes.
Lastly, oil changes in the S2000 are the easiest of any car I have ever owned.
1) Put the car up on jack stands (some don't bother doing this, but I find it makes the work easier and you can do other inspections at the same time)
2) Place an oil pan under the car
3) Remove the drain plug (easiest if done from under the car, but can be done from above)
4) Drain the oil
5) Remove the oil filter with a special wrench (done from either above or below the engine)
6) Pour a small amount of new oil into the new oil filter and install it
7) Replace the drain plug using a new aluminum washer
8) Remove the oil filler cap and fill the crankcase with 5.5 quarts (not 5.1 as incorrectly stated in the owner's manual) of the oil of your choice
9) Replace the oil filler cap
10) Start the engine, listen for untoward noises and look carefully for oil leakage, and then let it run for a few minutes
11) Turn off the engine, let the car sit for 3-5 minutes to let the oil drain back into the crankcase
12) Check the oil level, and top up as necessary
13) You're done

The drain bolt (incorrectly called a plug here) is located on the same side of the engine as the oil filter (i.e. passenger side). It is located on the side of the oil pan. New washer are $.18 cents:
