well.... this is a long thread
im gonna be different from other angry S2000 owners
i will help u out to get an S...

first off, Two ways to get an S are:
A) you pay for it (which u dont wanna do since u r only 18)
B) lie like a mofo...

so your choice is clearly B
When you lie to your parents, u cannot give them a choice. create the worst situation possible and have them HELP you out
it seems like they are pretty understanding parents since you mentioned that u still drive an F150. If they were my parents, you'd be taking bus to school for next 4 years.

Anyhow, some of the lies that you can come up with for extra cash...
1. your apartment rent - you can get extra $150.00- 200.00 by telling them rent is $600.00 instead of $400.00-450.00.
2. books and school supplies - no parent will refuse to spend money on their child's education... easy money here
3. tuition & tutoring - same as #2 more money though ... as for tutoring, tell them u r having a difficult time catching up due to upper division classes
4. food - cafeteria food can be pretty expensive... on the other hand, eating out is worse

you basically get an idea right?
this is gonna be a long term process w/ a bunch of lies I wish the best...

one last thing... you can get a financial aid every semester or a loan

If he is ABLE to get a free car, then he SHOULD at least try, given that his parents are willing.
This mentality is why redneck lotteries...I mean lawsuits....exist in the first place.

Yeah im 19, i just finished my first year here at Rutgers University. I HAVE to get good grades, especially since im considering medical school. So i made sure to work hard, and i think every kid needs to do that before they get in over their head. Saying that you bought your car is a great feat, but its far less important than saying you got straight A's in college, cause then you could buy your own Porsche if you wanted to. So dont worry about if you bought a car or not. If you have a car, thats just a wonderful accessory, and a possible avenue if you want to take a break from your school work. Owning a car isnt everything. A 3.5 GPA is.

Dont listen to other people. Be a kid, but be responsible. Youre working to impress yourself and your family, not random ppl on this board.
I am old enough to be an employer and thus know what I look for when I am involved in hiring someone, but still young enough to remember my job interviews and hunting for a "real" job out of school.

I can tell you that in my profession (lawyer) people with a 3.5 undergrad from Rutgers or some other respectable universty are frankly a dime a dozen. Don't kid yourself into thinking that a 3.5 is the ticket to worldly success.

Real world work ethic and self-reliance are more important traits for most jobs, professional or not, and success ultimately in most jobs, than having a 3.5 from Rutgers, or a 4.0 from Yale. The experience of getting a relatively crappy job, applying yourself, saving your money, and buying a car yourself (even if it is a 76 Chevette or the equivalent today) and not having the parents buy everything for you really means more than you think.

The GPA vs. Job trade off assumption you have made is false. I bet most people who worked in high school or college, etc. will say they got better grades when they had the part-time job, as it forced them to grow up, budget their time and they had less free time to get distracted from school. And, there is nothing like working a crappy job even if it pays OK to motivate you to get good grades in school so you can do something else with the rest of your life.

By the way, you are kidding yourself if you think a 3.5 from Rutgers is going to ensure a salary that can support buying a new Porsche right out of college (maybe you meant buy a used 924?) That's another thing that having a job and trying to save to pay for your own car, etc. does for you -- you realize how a salary that is $35K a year doesn't go far when you take out FICA, taxes, etc., pay rent, food, utilities, and other things, and given the graduated income tax structure, the more you make the higher percentage of your income never sees your bank account. So even if you are "making" $70K a year chances are you probably will have to buy (or should buy) a Honda Pilot right out of school, not a Porsche Cayenne.

Well, although it may seem like it, I was planning on keeping as close to a 4.0 as possible throughout college (and I'm sure most people have the same idea when they are about to enter...), so I don't plan on keeping my grades just for the car(not just that, but I also plan on attending either law, or medical school after my undergrad work). And as for the job question, I truly don't have time to get a job. Besides the fact that "school always comes first," I also play baseball at my school (hence the name Bsbllr). Baseball in south Fl. is very competitive, and takes place during the whole year, with me spending six out of seven days on the field, either in a game or practice. My school especially is extremely competitive, having been state runner-up last year, and a favorite to win states this year. And yes, I have tried the part time job thing, and it didn't work out. Either they couldn't work around my schedule, or I would call in and cancel because of reschuled games. Eventually it began to take a toll on school because after a week of working 10 or 15 hours, and playing ball I was to tired for, or simply not have the time to do my schoolwork. For this reason my parents made me quit (which I still don't understand because my dad now tells me to get a job even after making me leave my last one ). Whenever I get the chance, I work with my dad to somewhat pay him back for everything that I am fortunate enough to receive.
