Maybe this should be moved to the attorneys forum.

[QUOTE=124Spider,Apr 1 2005, 12:45 PM]"Expected value" is a simple term in probability theory, which says that one takes the possible outcomes, multiply them by the probabality of each outcome, and that's the expected value.

[QUOTE=Chug-A-Bug,Apr 1 2005, 10:34 AM] In my example, I assumed the expected value was $100k.

Here's my take: I think both Spider and Chug-A-Bug have valid points. Before I take on a career with the government, I had a very successful solo practice. I tend to balance out my cases between the bread and butter cases (family & criminal) and contigency type of cases (such as PI). One good thing about a contingency case is that you can withdraw before you get into it too deep. A little discovery and research will often decide the outcome of your involvement. But when I smell blood, I will go all the way.

I view OP's case as more than just for financial gain. If I wanted to be well-known in the community for a long time and to build a reputation, I would take it in a heartbeat. Sometimes one can make a lot of money on a case for very little work. I fondly remember when I first started out and had a client. He was turned down by more than 3 lawyers and his SOL was about to expire. I felt that this client has very little expectation, cooperative and understanding (the two most important traits that I look for in a client). I took on his case. I spent one hour to prepare the demand package and 2 phone calls. Not to brag but I made over $12k for less than 2 hours of work and I never saw a happier client.

That's just my 2 cents.

I think Spider and Chug-a-bug out to put on gloves and duke it out. And Grazhoppa, you can be the referee. I'd love to see attorney's swinging at each other!!!

update

Attorney is taking the case on contingency. Possible claim areas are: breach of contract, consumer act, car window sticker rule, vehicle sales rule, and fraud...potential for class action also.
