With a 2000 S2000, or any AP1, its common to smell oil in VTEC - F20 engines burn oil when its engaged. All the rev limiter is is a fuel cut off, so you don't do any damage by hitting it on acceleration.
My MY00 car still uses zero oil, and I hit VTEC on a regular basis, so it's not really true that ALL AP1's burn oil. Our chief mechanic use to say (half joking) that the reason my car never used any oil is becuase it was being driven so hard all the time that it just didn't have time to consume anything other than gasoline and back tires.

The only time I've ever *smelled* any oil has been when I've spilled some on the exhaust manifold, and IMO it's certainy *not* normal.

Well, your S may not burn oil, but in general, I think you'll agree that AP1s do burn oil, and I can't think of anything that really happens in VTEC that would cause a smell.

Fwiw, I've smelled oil in AP1s and AP2s after VTEC driving, so its normal to me at least.

To the OP - do you get the smell if you just drive at 8500 rpm? Fwiw, what is your oil level?

Possible reasons for odor:
1. Clutch is slipping - might be responsible for sudden revving and hitting the rev limiter. Next time, try to notice speed/gear combination and whether it should result in max rpm.
2. Drive belt is slipping at very high rpm, perhaps because a/c compressor or alternator can't take the max. rpm's.
3. Sphincter reaction to the thrill produced by VTEC.

How bad did you hit the rev limiter? My CDV caused my clutch to slip and I bounced the rev-limiter from 3-4 and 4-5. Anyways, turns out it was unburned fuel in the cat. It should go away after your next drive. If you still smell it, get a friend to see if they can identify the smell, as it may be in your head.
