What's the proper procedure for cleaning/washing our nice fluffy covers?

If you bought the Honda cover, the washing instructions came with it. They say you can wash it with it on the car! The other method, and the one that sounds more sensible, is to take it to a commercial laundromat and put it in one of the big washers that just spins the item, no agitator because that will ruin it. And the instructions mention using a certain type of detergent only, sorry my cover is elsewhere so I can't read you what type they specify.

i own 2 covers. one is in the trunk (the clean one) and one is at the cleaners... whenever i wash my car i switch covers (and have the "dirty one" cleaned). i know that the instructions that came with the car indicate that we should only use a certain detergent- but am interested in what others are using. the same instructions do say to wash the cover on the car- yeah right!! (i have washed mine in my clothes washer using porsche top cleaner- worked fine)... other ideas?
