my last fill-up was 12.8 gallons...i drove about 40 miles after the light came on, so that calculates to the light coming on around with ~2 gallons left.

i cut it pretty close...

Wow my gas light has never come on, ever. In any of my cars. I guess I just fill up to much. I never drive more than 200 miles without filling up.

I do adore how we've bought a japanese car, that's built for a country using the metric system and we all quote 2.5 gallons as the petrol light 'on' quantity.

I'll be the first to admit i care more about how many miles per gallon the car does than miles per litre, but in a world where petrol is sold in litres and fuel rates are all done per the metric system, it seems pretty funny that we discuss the topic in the way we do.

If the light comes on, I gas up ASAP. I don't really have much faith in the accuracy of gas gauges in cars.

I was on I-5 in CA when the fuel light turned on. There were no exits for 10s of miles, so I tailgated a truck so that it blocked my headwind. I thought that was a good idea at that time because it really helped with mpg until I got to a gas station 30 minutes later,

I also turned off the AC and rolled down the window (remembering the show on Mythbuster concerning better gas mileage if the AC is turned off vs. wind resistance). The truck block a significant portion of the wind resistance anyways.

True, but the only time we here in the US see the word 'liter or litre" is in reference to engine displacement or quantity of some beverages i.e 2 liter bottle of Pepsi, ect... Given the chance most people here couldn't measure out a liter to save thier lives so it really is no surprise that we refer to gallons as the default for measuring large volumes of fluids.

My gas bar was completely at zero. No bars left at all. I filled up and put 11.2 gallons in the tank. So, even with driving with the idiot light on for a day and no bars left on the display, I still had 40-50 miles worth of gas left.

I've gone 60 miles after my gauge showed 0 bars.. which is many miles after the gas light first came on.

I filled up 11.9 gallons.

11.1 gallons used when the light first comes on, out of a total 13.1 gallons, meaning you have about 2 gallons left when the light comes on, which should be good for 40-50 miles.
