I do adore how we've bought a japanese car, that's built for a country using the metric system and we all quote 2.5 gallons as the petrol light 'on' quantity.

I'll be the first to admit i care more about how many miles per gallon the car does than miles per litre, but in a world where petrol is sold in litres and fuel rates are all done per the metric system, it seems pretty funny that we discuss the topic in the way we do.
So? A gallon is still a gallon, and a liter is still a liter, regardless of which country you happen to be in. (Except whan a gallon is an Imperial gallon rather than a US gallon, but that's a different issure.)

I drove 34 miles after the light came on and when there were no bars left.

Filled up 12.49 gallons at the tank.

So I guess for the most part when the light comes on, its safe to say you are going to be able to make it to the next gas station.

You definitely have plenty of time to get gas after the light comes on. I've driven about 30 miles after light and 10 miles with no bars.

I usually go another 20-40 miles when the light comes on. It always seems to come on with about 2.5gallons left, so since if you ave 20mpg then you can easily gon another 50+ and I have on a few occasions.

Once all the bars were gone, I drove it another 26 miles before my S stalled going uphill.
