I used to drive the car hard, probably hitting VTEC at least once a day but now, even when I drive it semi hard, I'll shift before 6k to stay out of VTEC. When I need it though or when I'm playing in the twisties, VTEC is constantly on tap.

I also go to the 1/4-mile track and do Auto-X events... so it does work there too.

Drive hard???BARELY!!! hahahha

Well I only drive about 3k mileages and I haven't fully grasp the true potential of the car yet. At first I was scare of the VTEC and have to use both hand to hold the steering each time hitting VTEC. hahahha

So now I finally calm down on the VTEC. I want to slowly drive harder and harder. Right now I'm just scare to screw up the car b/c it is so NEW... if it like old and used car, I'll prollly try to break it the first time I sit in it. hahahha

I've gone through a similar change. When I first got the car I was constantly playing with VTEC and 9k, and up until the CTSC/AC was installed, I'd hit red line at least a few times every time I'd take the car out. I still hit VTEC a few times every time I take the car out, but after a period of playing around with the supercharger's power I settled down into a much more conservative driving style.

When you go WOT but use 6k as the redline, is that "hard driving?" With FI, you blast away from traffic, so everyone thinks you're driving like a madman, but you're really not pushing the car at all. IF (and only if) that's considered hard driving, then I drive hard on the street quite often, but if driving hard means running the car for all it's worth, on the street, then it's not something I do very often. For the most part I reserve that for autocrossing or other more appropriate venues. If you actually do what CKit suggested, and go balls out all the time, you won't be at it for long. You may not kill yourself, but even if you don't kill somebody, you'll end up without a license, and possibly in jail.
But even when I take it to 6k, I'm not flooring it. I do maybe half throttle. I just do it to get past traffic. Other than that, it's the usual shift between 4k and 5k.

I just don't want to beat on the car that much. I know the car can take it, but if I don't need to do it, I'll drive casually.

Driving "balls out" in this car is not the proper way to enjoy its capabilities. This is not a street racer. Making smooth transitions from one turn to the next is where you will find enjoy in this machine. Racing other autos off the line or in the passing lane will leave you high and dry, so to speak. You might want to look in to a turbo.

Properly hitting the apex of a corner AFTER a down shift will make you fall in love with this vehicle. FYI, down shifting into the apex will put you off the road before you know it. Learn how to be graceful with this machine rather than going "balls out". Smooth motoring will make your tires last long, get you around corners faster, and will keep your s2k in ONE piece.
I couldnt have said it better myself. At an autocross this car is a blast driving balls out. You wont run the best time but you can slide around and not worry about crashing. My tires dont like it

I spend far higher percentage of my time in the car WOT in VTEC than I used to. Of course, these days I'm trailering it to the track and only driving it on the street to run out to get more gas.

How hard I drive my S is depending on how hard my bone is.
