Already mentioned, worth repeating:
If you feel the VTEC hit, you are sacrificing performance.
Ideally, the crossover would be at the rpm where power on the low-rpm lobes is EQUAL to power on the high-rpm lobes, and you wouldn't feel a "hit". Stock VTEC engagement is too high, should be lower in the rev range to maximize performance.
Not to mention, a "hit" in the powerband is not desirable for performance driving, you always want to be able to be very smooth with power delivery. A stronger VTEC "hit" at the wrong instant could lead to disaster.

As previously mentioned, the more VTEC "kicks", the less power you're making.
Does your friend happen to have an intake or exhaust or any modifications that affects the breathing of the engine that you don't have? An intake for example can make the vtec cross-over sound a lot more aggressive or give the false impression that you're making more power. Same thing with an exhaust. I've seen a lot of folks mistake volume for power.
Hope this helps.
P.S. if VTEC hits you. Hit back.

my friends '02 hits harder than my '01. his car feels more sluggish under 6k rpm.
the smoother the crossover, the faster your car is. if it 'hits' like you say it does, you're losing power before the vtec crossover.
can be solved with a tune.

also, just wondering, i feel less of vtec "hit" when i take the airbox off. people say blah blah it loses power, but at highway speeds, i wouldn't really think so. anyway, i think taking off the lid smoothes out the torque band a bit.
