I've decided that the S2000 is a lousy highway car.

Secondary Roads: 100% joy

Highway: 10% joy (for those of us who generally obey speed limits)

What I wanted was to see how many people own the car and DONT drive it like its the Indy 500.

I'm actually surprised that I didnt get a thread full of guys like you telling me I have no business owning the car, simply because I don't think the Fast & The Furious was the greatest movie ever made.

Thanks for the post though Maybe I will buy the car and drive it like a Civic....just to piss off guys like you
Yea, what he said!!!
I agree with you 100%. You are going to love this car! I have had 4 other Hondas and loved every one of them. But, I didn't love them like I love this car. It makes you grin when you drive it in "Civic mode". It makes you giggle like a school girl when you drive it in "Vtec mode". I read your previous posts and I very much respect that you are a conservative driver but take my advice on one thing; find a tunnel or a big freeway overpass and go under it at at least 8000rpm. The sound is truly amazing.

The one thing I am curious about is the "noise" factor. Thats a relative thing, I suppse. I drive with the stereo cranked anyway and don't expect to be redlining it, so I'm not sure I'm going to care much.

The back speakers will solve the problem. They "fill" the cockpit with sound.

Noise could be an issue, but I think the thrill of driving the car makes you forget about the noise.

Just out of curiosity.....I've seen some mention of taking driving school or something. What's that all about? I'd be interested in learning how to handle the car at a driving school, if there is such a thing. What do they do? take you out to a track and teach you how to maneuver the car ? I'm curious.

for the most part, you're right. Driver education classes (DE) can either happen at a track or take place on a huge parking lot(i.e. old airfield). There you SAFELY learn the limits of your car. Usually, an instructor rides with you to provide realtime feedback. Some courses provide classroom time since a decent proportion of what people think they know does not apply to performance driving. There is always a risk, but usually the worst that happens is hitting acouple of cones.
Not sure where weston, FL is but on march 9th there is a DE event in (Pensacola and krazik is putting one on in late march in Sebring, FL.

If neither of these are close enough to you, check with in the community forums or check www.scca.org to find out about events near you.

Ganthet,
I think cdelene does have a point, unless $10K really doesn't mean anything to you. Bottom line, if you don't "push" this car beyond the 6K limits, it drives just like a Miata. I should know, my wife's car is a 2002 Miata. (For about $10K less than the S2K, you can get a basic Miata with an upgraded stereo.)

This car is LOUD at 70mph, even in 6th. Top up or top down, if you enjoy your stereo, you'll have to spend at least $200 - $600 just to really hear it decently at 70mph. (Heck, this car flat out IS NOT for "stereo heads", IMHO. While you can always mod it out, you'll lose valuable trunk space to get a real 'thumper'.)

In bumper-to-bumper, it's one of the worst designs. Low torque means you'll have to rev it much higher than you're used to in order to get it rolling from a dead stop, your mpg will probably bite rocks in b-2-b traffic. (Though you CAN stay in 1st gear much longer than other cars - anticipating a slow down back to a crawl or stop - BUT it'll be LOUD.)

IN CURVES - the wheels are angled so that the car is INTENDED to be pushed hard through the curves. This aggressive cornering "flattens" out the tires such that they are all level, thus ensuring better traction AND the tires THEN wear evenly. If you baby this car through the curves, you'll wear out just the insides of your rears and will have to replace them even more prematurely than expected. (You should plan on no better than 10k - 12k miles on the rears, less if you baby it all the time. Many people get less, some more. I'm at 8K and just had them checked. Level wear, maybe 2K left. Check this board for more info.)

This type of in-depth advice could go on&on. So, don't discount cdelene's advice as being "snobbish". It's just that he/she understands the design differences in this car are oriented toward the 'aggressive driver who feels the need to hold the gears close to redline.

Now. GO BUY THE CAR. :-) IT's awesome. :-)

I couldn't disagree more with the above post. I have driven a Miata. They are crap compared to this car. The cowl shake on a Miata is inexcusable(i.e. The windshield and windshield frame shake like hell when you hit a bump). The car is smaller than the S, Has a smaller trunk and does not even come close to handling as well.
My stereo is actually plenty loud to hear on the freeway but it definitely could use some help. I am more into the sound of the car than the radio so this is a non issue for me.
In traffic the car is VERY comfortable to drive. Just because it has tons of power up top does not mean that the car does not drive well in the low rpm's. Just think of the stop-and-go performance of this car to be equal to a Miata with similar performance until you hit 6000 rpm. THEN IT TURNS INTO A MONSTER! Two cars for the price of one.
I have never heard of anyone wearing their tires only on the inside. Actually there are plenty of board members that have reported getting as many as 18,000 miles on a set of rear tires.

But, there is one thing he said that I strongly agree with........[QUOTE]Originally posted by chandler_hall
