I wonder why they stuck that tape on the windshields anyway? Was it just cosmetics?

That would be my guess. I'm among those who prefers the look of these cars with the black tape applied, especially on the more brightly colored cars. But as with anything so subjective in nature I can understand how others might feel differently.

Some time ago I ordered a spare set of the OEM pieces needed to replace those on my car, just in case things were ever to deteriorate to the point it would really bother me.

I too like the look of the black tape. I like both I guess. Seems this is another item that might need to be in my ever expanding inventory of spare parts!

Perhaps the idea behind the plastic was to prevent rock chips to the painted surround area.

I prefer the painted look.

I personally think the car looks weird with the tape off and top down, looks like every other convertible. The black tape gives it a more unique look. Plus the proportion of the super skinny section of painted frame vs the rest of the car looks weird.

Now, with a hardtop it looks OK but not my favourite either.

Not bad for the fall colors, IMO. Plus it makes the car more visible driving through trees.

Default Get it painted and be done

For what it costs to get replacement decals from Honda, why not just get it painted black. If you strip the old decal off most shops around here charge between $200-$400 to paint it. No disassembly needed. You’ll get a high gloss finish and it’ll stay that way.
