I never VTEC, will it hurt the engine?
Guys, you all know best. From now on I'm going to make a determined effort to rev above 6,000 rpm. Thanks to all for the encouragement and advice. I was just trying to take it easy because the car is new. I considered that the engine is still breaking in under 3,000 miles.
Haze,
I don't know how old you are, but I was brought up babying engines. The advent of electronic engine management, however, has changed the whole picture.
The real risk in the days I learned how to drive was that it wasn't hard to blow an engine by overreving it. The S2000, bless its heart, has a rev limiter that simply won't let you do that unless you blow a downshift (which is an entirely other story -- DON'T DO THIS!)...
If you don't VTEC, then it's true that you won't be using the cam lobes that engage at that time. It just means that you're not breaking them in. I'm pretty sure this won't have any of the nasty side effects that our rotary-inclined bretheren have, but it's possible that you might find yourself consuming more oil in VTEC later on in the car's life, if you choose to start using it then.
Anyway, my advice is to enjoy the motor. I was hesitant at first, but now I take it to VTEC quite often. You do not hurt this engine by running it hard, and the rev limiter prevents you from making a big mistake by forgetting to shift.

There are a lot of people that don't bring the S2000 up there. They enjoy the car because of it's awesome handling and taut ride characteristics. Some of them just buy it for a cruiser, and if th ey enjoy it, then it's all the same.
