I never VTEC, will it hurt the engine?

"Do you really think that always driving below VTEC will cause the second cam lobes to "forget" how to work? You're giving a mechanical device far too much of a biological characteristic ("if you don't use it, you lose it"). I'm of the opinion that if you were to continue to drive your car like you have been, it'll go a helluva a lot longer than any of our cars will, troublefree. Then when you finally sell it, the next owner will go out and drive the crap out of it and it'll perform like it's supposed to."

Thanks, that's the most direct answer so far; it addresses my concerns.
I'd like to say, however, even if one never revs high, the S is extremely pleasurable. There is the great handling, the beauty, the superb shifting, and the high quality thrum of the engine even at 4,000 rpm.

I remember as a boy getting a new "The Duke" football. I was reluctant to toss it around in the street because of the scuffs and scratches it would suffer. Could the football take it? Absolutely. But while it was new, I protected it at first. In the same way, my S2000 is new and I want to take care of it as best as I can. So I guess I am breaking the engine in a bit slower than most.

Purple Haze--Are you planning on keeping you car a very long time? If not you may be just "saving" the motor for the next person. Oh, I'm planning on keeping mine a long time, yet I still enjoy letting the car "stretch it's legs" now and then. The 04 red lines at about 8k so you have lots of room for vtec.
Do you use 6th gear, or are you saving that too?
Anyhow, it's your car, enjoy it the way you want.

And I'm not sure where that business about the "ridges" came from.

Ridges near the top of the cylinder wall. After thousands of miles at less 6K rpm a run up to 8 K might stretch the rods enough to allow the top ring to contact the built up ridge = broken ring.

I've never heard of this, let alone in our engines. We've got pretty strong rods and I cannot perceive of them stretching enough to do what you indicate with an addition of 3000 rpm. Can you cite a reference for this phenomena that would be applicable to the F20C? Remember, we have FRM liners and very tight tolerances between piston and cylinder walls. Not sure if ridges would form so easily.

Maybe it wouldn't happen in this engine. I'm thinking back to the sixties when I used to work on american V-8s.

There was always a significant ridge that had to be removed. I'm sure with closer tolerances ridge formation would be less of an issue.

Has anyone out there torn down their engine? If so, what did you observe?

First, I can't believe you haven't experienced the glorious awsome SOUND and acceleration of the V-TEC yet. Why did you buy this car? You are a new owner and driver of this awsome machine and I do reccomend you take your time feeling out the power and handling. I spun mine out on a wet road at 75 mph the third day I owned it. I developed RESPECT real quick. Now owning the car for over 6 months I drive the wheels off! They love it!! The S2K was born to be drivin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Run the guts out of it... It just plain loves it.... to answer your question.. It won't hurt the car to never engage the V-tec....It will only hurt it's feelings....... Your ECU is there thinking to itself..... why won't my new owner PLEASE MASH THE DAMN GAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
