I have driven M3's with both and prefer the 6speed manual over the smg. The BMW guys I know say the smg does not preform as well. ymmv

On the M3 I prefer SMG.
yes, if it were a track car. no more heel and toe, being able to fully modulate the throttle with the right foot and fully modulate the brake with the left while managing gearchanges with the hands would be awesome.

That's interesting, did you race it or do you refer to driving around town? The word on the street has typically been that the SMG does not produce as good lap times as the 6speed.
I do not see any way that a human can pop off shifts as fast and consistent as the computer does in this car. Now, having said that, I do not think that I am as good on the SMG as I am with the 6spd in my S2000. The BMW system is a bit cumbersome to use if you are not used to it. But, once an experienced driver gets used to using the SMG, I do not see any way that the same driver in a 6spd car could be any faster.
I do not think the SMG system is right for the S2000 the way it is set up on the BMW. If I had my choice, I would prefer a true sequential gearbox just like a motorcycle but with a manual clutch.

All SMG's (on Z4, M3, 645) DO come with clutches. Downshifing is voluntary

to those who said "hell no", have u actually driven SMG tranny BMW E46 M3??
i would say i am a faster driver at the track and autocross w/ the SMG, but it takes all the fun out of driving! Also SMG just means more crap to break down the road... Great choice for the ones that can't drive a stick and want a sports car...but just think what you are missing out on if you never experienced the 6 speed on the s2000, it's just amazing!
btw 360 F1 system sucks, it's about 10x slower than the SMG system...
