Insurance cost, wow...
I have a 702 score, Single, No Kids, No Accidents, No Tickets. Live in Austin Texas and my insurance went down from a POS 2001 Monty Carlo I am paying $118 a month. Kinda cool to get a car that cost more and over all the ownership cost went down by $25 bucks a months with the change. This was from Progressive.
46 years old, Clean record, Car driven less than 4000 miles/year. $100.00 per month to insure. My '02 Dodge pickup is only $460.00 per year and is driven daily with a much higher risk of being in an accident. The S has a terrible rating with insurance companies. Good luck.
I'm 35 with a 680 credit rating ( whatever that means
) I'm in Michigan and in the nice months where I keep full coverage my insurance is $660 for 6 mos. My wifes 04 Corvette convertible which costs $20k more is almost $200 hundred dollars cheaper. Why I don't know and it makes no sense

Since you're in California, try getting a quote from Mercury and Wawanesa. Those two were by far the cheapest when I was shopping for insurance. I eventually went with Mercury, although Wawanesa was slightly cheaper.
With Mercury, I pay $100/month for my '02 S2000 for 100/300/100 coverage and deductibles of $100 (comprehensive) and $500 (collision). The car is listed as my daily driver of 25k miles annually. I'm 26, there are two other cars on my policy, and I have a good driver discount applied. I live in San Jose. Not sure what my credit rating is, but it was hovering around 700 the last time I checked.
Your quote sounds pretty high, and I'd definitely check elsewhere.

This in interesting, I called the agent today and asked for a quote on a 05 Miata, just for curiosity...
Almost same as the GTI...$40/year more...
So, GTI: 990/year
Miata: 1040/year
S2000: 2000/year

I'm a 708 score, live near Van Nuys (Los Angeles). Married, one kid, multiple car & policy discounts. No tickets no accidents.
$1270 per year via "The good hands people".
You should be able to do better.
