Default Insurance is a PITA!

Here is the bare facts.

1. I own a 2000 s2000.
2. I live in Iowa. Winter will be arriving soon
3. I refuse to drive this car in the winter. I drive a 1994 Taurus SHO for a winter car.
4. Progressive insurance will not allow me to keep the $3000 custom parts insurance on my car while it is stored... wtf?

I had a great time with my S this summer and now that I have put money into it. I want to be able to protect my investment. I was going to turn in my plates come November and put my car in a garage over the winter. I do not want my car being under-insured if the worst case scenario happens. As it has been vandalized once before. I don't feel that I need liability coverage on my vehicle; because it is not going anywhere, and is a waste of my hard earned money. I am still making payments and require comprehensive on it anyways. Is anyone familiar with Iowa law and can explain this? I am sure there are plenty of other people that get away with this. I pay $100 per month to insure these two cars (perfect driving record 25 years old). This would reduce it to around 50-60 with the added custom parts insurance.

Thanks,

Josh

FYI its the lein holder who requires you carry comprehensive insurance on your car.

as for help in your situation, i got no help. maybe renters insurance can help you out? Ive got my insurance and with USAA and highly recommend them.

You have a lien; the lienholder has the right to require you to carry insurance to protect their collateral. The lienholder probably doesn't care about your aftermarket parts; they just need assurance that their lien will be paid.

It could be worse: if you leased you probably couldn't drop your liability.

I was going to keep my comprehensive and just drop the liability. The car will not be moving...

as someone who had their Porsche towed out the driveway, if for some reason you think you have issues, I would say stick with the insurance. I had over $10k in mods not insured on that car. =(
