insurance repair procedure
First of all, please forgive me if this is the wrong forum. It seems the most appropriate, at least to me.
I recently had rocks hit me S2k, and filed a claim with my insurance company. Since I plan to bring the car to Cars Dawydak, (one of the recommended places on this board) the insurance company will send me a check, and let me take care of the repairs. The problem is that Cars Dawydak wants to see the insurance company's estimate before they are willing to look at my car in detail. It seems to me that they want to see what the insurance company is willing to pay, and try to take all of it. (They claim that they want to see the estimate to make sure that it is workable) This doesn't sound competitive to me. I think they should offer a competitive estimate / quote, and let me make the decision of weather or not to bring my car to them. What do you guys think? Thanks.

That sounds fishy to me too. What if you walked in off the street looking for a shop to repair damage you'd pay for yourself? Would they ask you what you were willing to pay before giving an estimate? I've never had a shop decline providing an estimate when asked. Weird. I guess you could have gone in there not mentioning it was an insurance claim and just asked for a straight quote but it's probably too late for that. In any case, you could try getting quotes from one or two other body shops to get some more data points.
I agree. What the body shop is asking is definitely not the norm. Their estimate should have nothing to do with what your insurance company is going to pay or (whether or not you are even being reimbursed by an insurance company.) With most insurance companies you get the estimates from your body shop before the insurance company even gives you a check. If they don't want to give you an estimate up front I would tell them you are going to find another body shop.
