What's odd is that both Bridgestone and Tirerack list the 245/45/16 PolePosition as having a tread width of 6.7inches.
Tirerack says this about Tread Width:
The Tread Width is the distance between the outer edge and the inner edge of the
tread of a new tire. However today's radial tires often feature tread designs that
incorporate rounded shoulders and there is no industry standard pertaining to "how
much" of the rounded shoulders should be included in the tread width measurement.
Because of this, it is difficult to accurately compare the tread width differences of one
tire brand to another. Tread width measurements are best used when comparing the
various tire sizes or lines manufactured by a single tire manufacturer. Several tire
manufacturers have chosen not to publish tread width dimensions.
And Bridgestone just gave a little picture to represent Tread Width:
There is a big difference between 8.25" and 6.7", and they even measured on 8" rims (which are a 0.5" wider than our stock rims).
I just realized the difference can be attributed to the fact the 6.7" wide number is from and "unloaded" tire -- whereas your measurements all dealt with tires that were under load/weight (since they were on the cars)!
