I think JDM is about completeness. Non-JDM guys will argue that parts are overpriced and they do nothing, etc. But I've been a JDM guy since the jump and I'm not trying to brag, but my 00 Civic Si was the cleanest I had seen around. The same with my S. Mugen parts on both. Clean, functional, INCREDIBLY ATTRACTIVE.

The reason that JDM companies have been around so long is because their parts and look is original. I'm not saying American companies aren't, but there are far fewer companies in the U.S. that have that certain style and quality of the parts. Tell me you didn't sh*t your pants the first time you saw that ASM intake that was $2000+. Yeah it's expensive, but it looks so BALLIN'!

I think JDM in spirit will stand the test of time. Mainly because people who don't care as much about their cars won't pour all their money into making it compelte. The ballers will step it up and uphold the standard. The guy with the Civic and triple-stack wing doing the ricer bounce w the cut springs(come on you know you did it ) will uphold the standard for rice. Hopefully, it will stay this way and us JDM guys can keep the dream alive!
Well put.

This comes up in every JDM forum. The whole JDM theory is about function over form, for the most part. Most of the things we do to our cars is for a reason. It's not like the F&F rice/show cars. Where people would add things that did nothing for the car. Just for the 'wild' look. The whole 'JDM' deal is just a race car for the street.

But because the clean lines of the car are not ####ed with with most JDM tuners, I dont think we will look back and laugh like we do at the F&F style cars of our youth.

You do realize where the "JDM" craze has gone don't you? No longer are you finding exceptionally clean cars with incredible suspensions and wider, lighter wheels.

The craze has strayed and taken an almost European "VW" angle. Now people are dropping their cars as low as they possibly can which is destroying their suspension geometry, throwing on ridiculously low offset wheels and running super skinny stretched tires with out of spec alignments in order to clear. Add to that miscellaneous sprinklings of uncertified roll cages, and some silly stickers. It's sickening to me that people defend their cars as being "JDM", all the while making it perform worse than stock and adding parts that won't even allow it on the racetrack to begin with.

In moderation JDM is fine, but it's gone far far beyond where it started.

(why's this in the S2000 gallery?)

I answered "no", but who knows really? I'm the same guy who as a kid used to look at cars like the two below on the internet and think, "That thing is sooo sick!"

Now this S2000, I wouldn't mind owning:

i don't see how those "jdm" cars having like -10 degrees of camber on like 20x20 wheelzzz with -91 offsets have anything to do with function over form.

with that said i think PLENTY of "jdm" styling is mainly for looks. i think the whole jdm thing is stupid to begin with for the most part, except for the wheels and the clean lowered look. stickers, being way too low, "jdm bodykits", etc are too much for me.

Im not from Japan but, I'm assuming you always want what you can't get factory. As far as what the JDM has to offer, maybe the people in Japan want what we have on the USDM because its not as common?

I think the JDM fad is right on par with fast and furious grade cars when it was at its prime. Instead of having the wildest body-kits it's now evolved into having the wildest wide-body kits AND the most ridiculously over-priced parts that do little to no good.

Thinking back to a couple car shows this year, (not the arthritis show, for us Ohio guys) but a couple others. The cars that won best of show looked like absolute garbage, but they had the "most" crap slapped onto the car even if it didn't make any sense to have it there.

It's no longer about having functional everyday parts. It's about who can put the most expensive garbage on their car. I know it's a "show" but people don't have any taste anymore when it comes to JDM.

Function>Form>Price NOT Price>Form>Function

If it serves a purpose and looks tasteful then price isn't an issue. BUT when it's stupid expensive, looks decent, and performs like a turd. Yet you still buy it..... that's rice.
