A fellow that I used to work with is an Amsoil dealer. And even though I used to use the oil in my '97 Integra, I was a bit reluctant to use their stuff in the S.
However, I spoke to him about two months ago decided I'd give the stuff a try. Now, I didn't use the engine oil, just the diff and tranny fluids. And I really think I can notice slightly smoother gear changes and maybe a bit less gear whine.
The old tranny fluid came out pretty clean looking, but the diff fluid was a dark gray and had a fair mount of metal shavings on the magnetic drain plug. But I guess that can be expected after 10k on the odo.
In all, I am just glad to know that she's got fresh fluids in her. I think it cost about $40 or so for all three quarts. I'm not sure about part numbers or anything, but the Amsoil website has that info.
Just an observation here: why does Amsoil uses 5W-30 specification for its transmission oil?
I've noticed that the other day in another topic about Amsoil.
5W-30 makes me think its engine oil.
Engine oils are specfied by SAE J300.
Transmissions have gears in them.
Gear oil is usually specified by SAE J306.
The numbers would be in the 75W-80 range (for transissions for example).
(just like the Severe Gear Oil)
Back on topic:
That 75W-90 gear oil you used has the GL-5 specfication right?
A 5W-30 engine oil viscosity is equal to a 75W-80 gear oil viscosity, so he did get the right thickness of fluid at least. I'm not a huge fan of Amsoil products, but aslong as it meets GL-4 spec then it is safe for our transmissions. I'd assume the 75W-90 meets GL-5 spec based on its name. That stuff is really expensive!
