K&N filter or OEM? Why?
Normal is 30,000 miles
Severe is 15,000 miles
I would do something with a CAI filter at 10,000 miles. It is more exposed to the elements.
Some will say an air filter really doesn't start working until it gets some dirt in it. So, don

I used to be a big K&N fan, but after some testing in the lab we found that they do not filter very well - for a possible few extra ponies way up in the RPM, the tradeoff of increased wear from dirt in the oil just did not add up in my view. There is also the effects of displaced oil on sensors upstream - I had to clean the MAF sensor on my Cobra when it started to idle weird, due to oil and dirt buildup from a gauze, oiled filter (in this case, an S&B). Actually, the S&B filter was made better than the K&N, as are the AFE filters (www.afefilters.com).
I just change the OEM filter every year or so - BTW, paper elements usually do not filter too well in the first few thousand miles, as the larger holes need to fill first. So overchanging a paper element is not a great idea, either.
I had high hopes for the Amsoil dual-media foam filter, but it did not perform as well as they claimed. Its flow was average to below average, and its dirt catching ability average as well in my tests. For all the hassle of cleaning, drying, and re-oiling, it just did not add up.
