Default Leaky trunk?

Has anyone had a problem with water leaking into your trunk?

We've had some heavy rain over the last few days, and I've noticed that water leaks into my trunk from one corner. This happens when the car is parked, but not when it's moving. My car is a '02. I found this TSB...

03-067 SEP 03 Body - Water Leaks Into Trunk

...but have not yet had a chance to ask the Honda dealer about it. I will do so when I get a chance, but figured I'd post my question here first to see if anyone else has had this happen.

A complicating factor is that my car had some body repairs a few years ago on the side where it's leaking. This could definitely be part of the problem, but I don't recall having any leaks over the past two winters, so the jury's still out on this one. I'm sure the problem has to be either related to the body repairs, or a bad gasket (the one that lines the perimeter of the trunk).

So, if you've had a leaky trunk, how did you fix it? Was it covered under TSB? Was it a bad gasket? Tell me whatever you can. Thanks.

Be sure to keep the seals well conditioned. Fortunately my '01 hasn't had this problem but if it did, I'd replace the seal right away. If that didn't work I'd put a second seal on the trunk lid to meet the bottom seal and cross my fingers.

Thanks! I was thinking of trying a new seal, but too lazy to figure out how to remove the trunk lid just yet. This may be wishful thinking, but now that you mention seal conditioning, I wonder if some Shin-Etsu around the seal might help. The seals between my windows and soft top were leaking recently, and Shin-Etsu solved that problem. The seals feel pretty similar. Might give this a try and report back, hopefully it's not too stupid of an idea.

Absolutely! Use Shin-Etsu on ALL your seals including doors and hood. In fact, I use it to condition ball joint covers and other essential rubber parts all over the car.

Cool, sounds good! I'll give this a try later this week and post back. Hey one last quick question that you may or may not know the answer to: do you happen to know if Shin-Etsu is harmful at all to paint or surfaces other than rubber? I'm rather sloppy when I apply it and usually have to go back with a towel to wipe off the excess. As you can guess, I'm concerned for my trunk lid. I'm guessing it'll be fine, but my paranoid side is forcing me to ask.

Thanks a bunch for the tip, you may have saved me a lot of headaches if this works! I've got my fingers crossed.

No problem. You should use it sparingly. Just wipe it on the seal with a paper towel or rag, let it sit for 30 minutes or so and then wipe off the excess.
