I know Joe, I am usually really carefull not to rev it past 5k until 3 bars. I went to the store and on the way back I hit 7k briefly, I thought that it would have been at 3 bars but when I looked down it was only at 2 still so I let off.

From what I understand redline with 1 bar is 6k 2bars is about 7.5k so you can vtec just not go to 9krpm.

Ive heard before that there is a little hole in the power just prior to vtec engagement so do you think that that is why the engagement feels so pronounced and that by using Mobil your reducing that hole and therefore making a smoother transition?

edit:

Do you think that synthetic has different sound properties, I mean does it muffle sound better than dyno oil or maybe absorb it? Or is it jus that there is that much less friction causing the engine to make less noise. Idle is sooo much more quiet.
It just lubrcates better so at 9000 RPM the parts are not banging together. I put synthetic in every car I own after I had an issue with my Porsche with regular oil.

I decided to go with Castrol Syntec 10W/30 for the 3rd oil change (Castrol GTX 10W-30 @ 5K, Mobil 1 5W-30 @8K and this last one at 11K). I noticed a slight loss of VTEC transition with the 5W but that was expected. It appears as though the Castrol Syntec (from previous posts) has less affect on the VTEC transition than M1 and for now, I would agree. I'm not sure if it's due to the increase back to 10W (for the summer) or not but I've got that snap back. I think it's a "feel" issue as I don't think there is any difference in horsepower due to the change in synthetic. Syntec is every bit as good as Mobil One.

Ideally, the VTEC transition should happen seamlessly and smoothly and not be sudden like a gear shift.

Imagine being half way through a tight turn on a slippery road and then feeling the VTEC transition instantly produce a jump in torque. You might break loose and spin. A smoother, less noticable, but just as powerful transition is better.

Microbomb are you using 5W-30? If so, that may be your "problem". I've been using Mobil1 10W-30 for the past 20,000+ miles and have not noticed anything such as you describe. When my car hits VTEC, hang on, the same as it always has been. If you want a more noticable change, then I would recommend a CAI (AEM, Injen, 4IGS2000). Everybody knows when I hit VTEC, now.

I've noticed no VTEC difference with Mobil 1 (10W-30 like boiler - you know, the recommended weight...).

What I have noticed is that prior to using synthetic, I was still consuming a quart every 2000 or so miles. I now have over 2000 on the Mobil 1 (around 13000 total miles) and the oil is still at the "full" line. It also still looks brand new.

Im using 10w30. I dont think that there is any change in power or a less of a burst of power, I guess its just quieter. Harder to detect. I used to be able to really hear the roar of VTEC engagement but now.. its less dramatic. Not really a big deal. mntony, I have noticed I have not lost a drop since putting in Mobile 1 in, and the oil on the dipstick looks that same as it did when I put it in there. I am gonna put this stuff in my Scooby tomorrow.
