Default Light laws in So. Cal/LA? (long post)

Well i always wondered why the US has those orange lenses in their headlights.. and i figure, why do they put em in if they weren't meant to be there, i mean it is pretty ugly though. Well i have a 98 prelude, and the front blinkers have a clear housing, with this stupid lil orange lens inside it. So i used a solder gun and melted that out and now i have white/ambery blinkers, just regular bulbs colors. It looks really nice now. I also bought clear sidemarkers to replace my orange ones. Well my car looks really nice now. Well i was attempting to read on the california laws on what's illegal and what's not. And i mean, like every car i've seen has clear sidemarkers, too many, and cops really dont do anything about it. And reading the laws, the front blinkers can be in a color range anywhere from the yellow to white color spectrum. The rear ones however have to be red, or orange/yellow/whatever. So now i'm thinkin, ok, my rear taillights have a clear housing for the blinker peice, but again there's this little orange lens inside to make it blink orange. But it looks nasty, so i wanna clear it out like i did my front ones. And i dont really wanna be messin with the law with white blinkers, so i figure i'll buy orange bulbs, or yellow or somethin. And i also have a Nissan Pathfinder, and the rear blinkres, are clear, with an orange bulb! no lens, just an orange bulb. So my question is, if the pathfinder comes stock with a clear housing and an orange bulb for the blinker, why can't i do that to my prelude. And if i could, why dind't honda just go on and leave it clear with an orange bulb, a bulb seems cheaper than that plastic lens thing! And if i cleared the headlights on my s2k, would that be legal too? along with clear sidemarkers. Someone help me out and clarify what the law is yea?

do not know the exact law, but i remember a post about the s2k clears that show the california law( should come up during a search). i can tell you that police don't seem to care about front or sides here in california, my sister has a 98' prelude with clear sidemarkers and blinkers, she has never gotten caught. i've had my clears and smoked sidemarkers for about 3 months and never been caught for them(knock on wood). i believe the only time you will be caught is when you do something stupid(disobey traffic laws, speeding, illegal street racing, etc). other than that, don't even sweat it, what the police should go for are those rip off euro/altezza lights on other cars than is300's...

From my research I have not found anything in the CVC that states white as being an illegal blinker color in the front. I may not have looked hard enough, but then again cops don't even know the laws in california so it doesn't really matter.

I have been to my local CHP office many times to fix many tickets and they seem to agree that as long as it lights up the "amber" then you are OK. However, the bright yellow seems to pass too. Just not the white or blue/white.

The bottom line is that if they want to ticket you, you will get a ticket. You can fix it if it is correctable, but you still pay the $10 fee and have to spend your time to get it signed off. You see how the system royally sucks? Even if you take it to court and WIN, you do not get your fix it money back. The only way to get your money back is to not correct it, pay the bail ($70+ depending) and then waste your time in court and WIN and then wait a couple months to get your bail back, without interest.

I've gotten many tickets for things that are not really illegal. The vehicle code is too complicated for cops to even know and there are so many changes that they can't remember everything. I have the 2001 CVC book here (you can buy it from the DMV) and it is a good 1500-2000 pages long. I doubt anyone would be able to remember all that stuff.

I was told that so long as the sides and front blinkers light up amber/yellow and are not "blinding", it wont be a problem unless an officer has a stick up his a$$ and want to cite you for anything.

The advantage, and why Honda puts in the Amber lenses is partly due to DOT requirements and partly b./c it will allow tjem to put in the yellow reflectors as well so when another light source hits it, it RFLECTS yellow.
