The speedometer won't tell you whether or not you have gears, unless a yellowbox was installed along with the gears.

Yea. When you install gears, the speedometer is no longer accurate. Modifry makes a "yellow box" that corrects the speedometer error after gears are installed.

Example: With stock gearing, you are going 28 MPH at 6k in first gear. If you install 4.57:1 gears, the speedometer will still show that you are going 28 MPH at 6k in first gear. The yellow box corrects the speedometer so it reads lower, and accurately. Without the yellow box, gearing won't change the relationship between RPM and indicated speed, even though the actual speed will be lower.

Does that make sense?

To see if a used car has gears, use a GPS to measure road speed rather than the speedometer.
