Default Looking to buy, test drive question

I just drove a 2001 S2k with 36k miles and was a little disappointed. Once the car was warmed up (didn't take long in 90 degree Atlanta heat!), I was able to take it to 9k in 1st and 2nd. Maybe it's me but I didn't notice any big power "hit" at 6k rpms. Granted the sales guy was in the car with me and it was HOT but I thought I would notice more. Overall the car was awesome though. I was most impressed with the handling and shifter feel. I'm wondering if something might have been wrong with that particular car? Is there some test that I could do to see if it was performing correctly shy of taking it to a Honda mechanic?

Thanks in advance.

HEAT!! 90 degrees = potentially sluggish performance.

At least this is my experience.

You still should have noticed the VTEC switch though, if not from simply the radical change in engine note.

Also, did you floor it? Thats when you really feel it, at WOT...

On a scarier note, perhaps the engine oil was low... VTEC relies on oil pressure to engage....

Thanks for the reply. I did get WOT but I didn't check the oil. There were no indications of low oil pressure on the dash though. I think I need to go drive it again. Or maybe I need to find another one to compare with.

Thanks.

...I just installed a CAI on mine, and the heat soak is GONE. Also, if you want to "notice" it more, remove the top to the air box. When you hit VTEC the engine note will change much more dramatically, and you will know once you hit it.

A lot of people say they "cannot feel it" because of the lack of torque. Try side stepping the clutch around 6300RPM and you will see / feel the power. You will roast the tires all the way to 2nd (if you get on it hard after the dump).

Also, try downshifting to 3rd on a freeway onramp doing around 60. You will definitely feel it then.

Was it the spa yellow @ Gwinnett Place Honda? If so, what are they asking?

No, this was Red/Black at a small dealer in Woodstock. They are asking $18,500. I couldn't find any blemishes on the exterior. Actually, the only thing I found was the plate around the shifter had a little wear on it. It seems like a fair price and the Carfax checks out (for whatever that's worth).

Well, so much for the '01 model. I went straight to the local dealer and bought an '05 after a test drive. I chose Silverstone Metallic/Black. Can't wait to pick it up tomorrow!

Yeah....AP2 is easier to notice VTEC IMO because of the extra torque down low in the mid range.
