Default Looking for an S. What to look for?

I am interested in a 2000 model right now. Any things to look for good or bad with various years? Things to check out when I go to see that car?

Thanks guys.

Man, I'm reading about some transmisson TSBs on 2000 models.

Is this a problem with ALL, or some?

Any particular year to stay away from???

Make sure it has 4 wheels

The S2k is a pretty well built car, so above all else look for one that has been well cared for (physically and mechanically). Check for regular oil changes, rear diff fluid replacements, a clean air filter, etc. Talking to the owner can really tell you a lot about how they cared for the car. With a MY00 car inspect the top carefully looking for any wear spots or tears; also make sure the rear window is in good condition and isn't cracking. Make sure the car accelerates smoothly with no strange noises from the engine or drivetrain (the F20 does have a noisy valvetrain so do not be alarmed by this). Of course, you want all 6+R gears to engage smoothly.

When/if you buy the car, plan to change the engine oil, diff fluid, and tranny fluid right away. You may also need a coolant flush since the MY00 doesn't have the 10-year coolant in it from the factory. Check the cabin air filter too.

Check intake retainers. Could be potential failure from over-rev. Should have new plugs per TSB.

These are some great tips. Sounds like each year is pretty identical in what to look for.

What are intake retainers??? Are you talking about lifters?

There's a nice write up in the Introductions Forum FAQs.

Buy from November to January in the snow belt with less than 6000 miles per year, the prices really drop, but they pop up again well before spring.

Make sure there's enough tread left on tires. They quickly get worn out (especially OEM Potenzas) and replacing all 4 may cost you close to $1000.

Inspect the underside of the front bumper.
