Carbotech Engineering brake pads are manufacturer with a ceramic based chemical adhesive, which provides a thermal barrier, rated to 2000F (the thermal barrier), between the pad and the backing plate, and thus the pistons.

We have found that our pads, especially with the ceramic-based Panther Plus compounds, are very effective in weeping heat FROM the rotor, and then dissipating it via the pad material itself, thus making the brake system less prone to melting piston seals.

Andie

Andie, what's the dust level with the Panther pads? Also durability/friability?

I just bought a set of the panther plus pads and plan to save them for track use only.

Allan Haggai had a set at VIR and they worked very well. (see his thread https://www.s2ki.com/forums/showthread.php?...ghlight=panther )

He found they dusted quite a bit, but worse than that they constantly chirped. We figure it was from very light rubbing of the pad on the disc. When ordering my pads from Carbotech, they suggested it may have been that the caliper pins were not lubricated enough. I plan to lubricate mine when I install the Panthers.

They're kind of expensive though, after the 10% S2ki discount they were just over $200 for the set. But hey, now I have ceramic brakes!

I'm glad you asked. :-)

Now, first, I'd like to make the distinction between the PANTHER compound, and the newer PANTHER PLUS compoud, both of which have unique characteristics.

The PANTHER has a CoF of 0.52-0.54, is rotor friendly (hot or cold), dust moderate to heavy dusting (the dust is somewhat corrosive), and has a temperature range of 175F-1100F.

Now, the newer PANTHER PLUS has a CoF of 0.56, is also very rotor friendly (hot or cold), has much lighter dusting (the dust is non-corrosive), and a temperature range of 175F-1300F. The Panther Plus has a MUCH STRONG inital bite than the Panther, which has a smooth initial bite.

Further, the Panther Plus has a wear rate that is 20-25% BETTER than the Panther.

Last week, I spent the entire day testing the Panther Plus (again...<grin>) at Sebring on an ITS Integra GSR. This car did not have cooling ducts. What I noticed was that for the first session, during which they bedded the brake pads, the dusting was moderate. After cleaning the wheel off, which was very easy to do with a dry towel, as the Panther Plus has a dust that is very fine and non-corrosive, and is thus very easy to clean off, I sent them back out for a 30 minute session, and when the car came back in after hard driving, there was very little dust on the wheels...just a thin film. So, I can say that the Panther Plus will dust very little when driven on the track. It will dust a bit initially (bedding-in), but thereafter, it should not dust heavily. As an aside, the wear rate was excellent...after 3 1/2 hours of total track time replicating racing conditions, the pads wore down just 12%. We were there to see if the team could use the Panther Plus in a 6 hour enduro at Daytona later this month, while the other teams would have to stop for a pad change...and they should have no problem, especially after installing cooling ducts. Lastly, the rotor exhibited no signs of wear at all...no grooving of any kind whatsoever, so I was pleased to see this as well.

So, I want to make sure people do not confuse the PANTHER with the PANTHER PLUS.

The Panther Plus is typically used in the front, while we use the Panther in the rear - this is my setup for the S2000, as due to the light weight of the car, since the Panther Plus has such a strong initial bite, there may be rear-end lock-up.

I also got feedback from a 3000GT VR4 customer who ran the Panther Plus at Heartland Park a couple weeks ago. He said he had no brake fade (this is a fast and HEAVY car), light dusting, and almost no rotor wear...so he was happy.

If you have any other questions about our compounds, please call me at 877-899-5024, or send me e-mail at andie@carbotecheng.com, and I will gladly answer them for you!

Regards,

Andie

Andie-

I'm heading to LA this weekend for some R&D on the GT-R...

Let me talk to APEXi USA since I'll be in the neighbourhood- I'll try to take care of things on my end. Did you move down to FL? I haven't been keeping up with CGI lately- too much work and pit crewing for the GAC team has given me far more experience than instructing some beginner...

Besides, I want to talk to you about some brake pads for next year's One Lap assault (and maybe for the S2000 too...). Did you catch any of the coverage for One Lap?

Yeah, I moved to Fort Lauderdale...Midwest is nicer. :-)

I kind of miss the CGI stuff...it was fun! I only got sick ONCE instructing a newbie, hehe.

I'm living in Pembroke Pines...if you're in the Miami/FTL area, let me know...we can get together.

Call me some time to discuss your brakes. We have a new compound we are testing...super secret stuff. :-) Code name: Panther Titanium...kinda corny, but this compound should rock, with good wear too...CoF around 0.60 (anything higher and you'll damage suspension parts...or your eyeballs will fall out of the sockets), and temp range of 200F-1600F...stay tuned!
