I used to own a 99 miata...drove it 100k miles. was pretty modded...intake headers exhaust, lighter rims, tires sways...etc.. I loved it. It (with the mods) gave you more confidence in turns than the s2000 (fear of overstear) and was really really forgiving (more idiot proof)...Visibility was great with the top down. As for the s2k...there is no comparison...hitting the 9k red line is awesome. VTEC is so addicting...handling is great...the interior is great...all in all two very nice distinct cars, but the s2k is alot better...

i have a miata, a 2001 LS with lots of options and some mods and had a 1990 for several years. I love the car(s).
There is no comparison between the S and the Miata, they are different classes, with different purposes, build design, and quality. Better to compare the S to a boxster or some other high performance sports car. The S is a legal track car for the street. The Miata is a fun roadster, minimal even in today's trim in comfort, design, features, over all cost, and performance(unless you heavily mod it). both cars have a fun factor subject to the ownership experience.
the S is in the next class up and my next car most likely. I am learning from this forum about reliability, prices, subjective ownership opinions, and owner satisfaction. I have learned I love the car by driving it, the very best yardstick for choice. Don't believe the rumor about not having any torque, we know about that from driving a miata.

Imo, they are quite different cars in terms of purpose, and generally the replies, especially by those who have or have had Miatas, are right on.
For me, the Miata is fun and pleasurable to drive; it is a fun roadster. The S2000 is more 'serious'. Due to the speeds that can be reached, I cannot row through the gears of the S2000 around town like I can the Miata. The S2000 is able to get me up and down canyon drives much faster, but not necessarily with more fun, albeit the increased capability of the S2000 does make it more 'fun' in some ways as well.

I had a 99 Miata , I loved that car . I bought my S-2000 in first year they came out . I would have to say both cars are great . The S is a Miata on steroids . There are things I miss on the Miata resting my arm on the door sill and putting the top up and down . ( I could just reach over my shoulder and put it up . The motor is the greatest difference , the Honda will rev forever ( I love the sound) . If I could only have one car it would be the Honda ,but it would be great to have both.

I had an '01 Miata that I dumped $3500.00 into in upgrades. I should have gotten the S sooner & saved those dollars. The Miata was a more comfortable car for daily use & long drives to get to the mountains of NC. It's shortcomings (read H.P.) became glaringly apparent once I reached the mountains. The Miata was simply out of breath in comparison to the S.
It all boils down to what you expect from the car.
