There are tons of good oils out there, and by tweaking your drain interval and oil filter choice, you can use a wide range of products.

Just FYI, if you buy synthetics you CAN get 7500 miles out of them without a used oil analysis. And if it bugs you a ton, you can swap out the oil filter halfway through the interval.

Newer German cars such as Mercedes, BMW, Audi ... have some kind of oil monitor system that analyzes conditions of the oil by tracking the driving distances, cold starts ... to tell the owners when to change the oil. Synthetic oil is recommended for those cars, and the change interval usually around 12k miles or more, up to 18k miles for long distance drivers. When oil is changed, the counter is reset to 10k miles and you do not need to change oil again until it counts down to zero. The oil sumps of these cars have much higher capacities than most Japanese cars, at around 8 quarts or more.

I changed oil in my E430 once a year, at that time the counter goes down close to zero.
