MX-5 vs. S2000?

Gawd, you're clever. You can read my signature, to see that I race a Spec Miata. Amazing!! Of course, evidently you're not clever enough to realize that that means that I own both a Miata and an S2000, and that I autocross the S2000, so that I have a large amount of real world experience with both cars.
Your absurdly simplistic statement was both factually wrong, and incomplete. Par for the course in the fanboi world, unfortunately.
A jalopy of a Spec Miata will cost you $7000 even in this economy; my son sold his rolled-over wreck for $6500. A decent Spec Miata will cost $10,000. A front-runner can cost as much as $25,000. Your figures for buying a Spec Miata were utterly silly; you would have a difficult time buying a decent donor car (the basic Miata, without any race prep) for $2000, and that would only be the very earliest ones. It would be good to check your "facts" before spouting them.
But the real reason Spec Miata is the most popular SCCA class is because it's some of the best racing SCCA has to offer. The cars are quite equal, so it very much comes down to driving and setup skill. And, regardless of where you are in the grid, because the grids tend to be very large, you likely will have one or more cars to play with for the entire race. Don't expect to spend 30 minutes playing tag with another car when you race your S2000. If you ever race your S2000.
As much as I love my S2000, as much as I like autocrossing it, and as much as I loved tracking it, the first time I drove a Spec Miata on the track, I was hooked; it was so much more fun than the S2000,

I have no fight with you, so why are you attacking me? Reread my original post.
My figure are correct.
As you stated, a decent spec miata will cost 10k. Your son sold his wrecked SM for 6.5k. Cost of his wreck? 3.5k Dead on with my figures.
Lets say you have a 04-05 AP2, prepped for T3. Cost of entry? Roughly 16-20k.
Wreck it? You might get 6-10k out of it, depending on what is left. Cost of the wreck? 10k. Again, pretty damn close to my figures.

I see you post in R&C all the time, as do I, but I guess you've never taken notice, since you only autox your s2k now.

I used to own 2 miatas I used to take to track and the local autocross events prior to owning the AP1 i have now.
I had a 90, and a 02 miatas.
If I could make a comparison now, the miata was very fun due to it's relatively low cost of replacement parts, and aftermarket parts. Upgrading to the s2000 i have now was a mouthful to bite, because a simple intake can cost up to 2 grand. I find that the parts for the S2000 are rather overpriced, but thats the market.
Due to the lower costs to run anything, and a rather problem free nature, it was a lot of fun driving it like I didn't care. Now with the S, if I (knock on wood) wreck anything, it is very costly to replace.
The stock s2000 feels like a beefed up miata, i was very surprised by how stiff the stock chassis is. The miata is a wet noodle when it is stock.
My biggest concern about the miata was the engine power output. For track and autocross events, I was able to floor through most corners while having total grip, and it was tons of fun. Track is a lot fun too, but i was constantly being passed on the straights.
I switched to the S, due to it's (imo) more attractive apperance, and the amazing engine it has been given.
I love the miata, and the S, if I ever have a chance to own another car, I would get another miata again.

Before I bought my S, I went to the dealership and test drove a few miatas. Wanted the fancy one, hard top, etc. I got on the fwy, then took the first exit. The guy from the dealership asked me, "that bad huh"?
Yeah, I have respect for it, it's just not for me.
I also test drove the mazda speed 3, lol. Now that thing was fun! haha, cept my wife put her foot down and said that car was for teenagers. So here I am with my rio yellow S =) Love at first sight.

i went to a mazda dealership just to have a 50$ giftcard application signed. the manager promised me that the miata is more fun to drive than my s2000 and told me "his friend has one". he said i can make an appt to drive one when i want...maybe i'll take up on that offer in the summer. but i want to try driving one of the 90's miatas with the pop up instead of the ones now which look awfully closer and closer to s2k's.
