My Brother doesn't like the S2K
Fixed for you. If he actually knew a lot about cars he'd know better when it comes to the S.
Not just insurance but all the maintenance costs that are higher than on "typical" cars such as tires that you need to frequently replace, precision alignments that you need to get at least twice a year, all the fluid changes, etc.
^ This. The S isn't a "horrid" car. It's dangerous in the wrong hands but that's not an issue with the car. It's an issue with the driver.
Best bet is to get him some first hand experience with one. It's clear that he has none if you're accurately repeating his comments.

Great advice! The miata is a great car. I don't care what anyone says about it...its small and go kart like and will provide with adequate rwd experience for a new driver.
Sounds like you have a good brother who is just looking out for your well being.
I was around 19 when I brought home my 69 Z28 and urged my father to take it for a test drive.
I'll never forget the look of terror on his face as I'm sure he envisioned the worst that could happen to me. lol
The drinking and driving laws were WAY less strict then and alchohol abuse and speed went hand in hand.
Thank god my sons grew up in different times.
I wasn't too reckless with it but I did my share of hell raising and was lucky.
Good luck. Start off slow and get to know the car when the time comes.

I like the "start with a Miata" advice. Can be just as fun but doesn't have the weight/power to get you in (as much) trouble. Also, when you wreck it, which probably will happen, it'll be a lot cheaper to replace. Insurance will also be a lot cheaper.
How about this: make a logical decision for yourself with your own money and stand by it. The more you ask questions (at times) the dumber you look, because even though you'll only learn by inquiring, if you do it too much it looks like you know NOTHING and can't make a decision yourself.
For those that say not to get one cause you're young, screw that. Have fun man, cause things crop up when you're in your twenties and you never know what will happen. You have zero responsibility right now in comparison. My first 5 cars from age 16-22 were all sports cars and don't regret wasting a dime cause it was a time of my life that I'll never forget. This car is safe enough if you're a safe driver.

16 with an s2000 is fine, just know your limits beforehand and never take risks. A dumb teenager is no different than a dumb 30 year old, just be responsible. Experience: turned 18 last week with a 500hp s2000.
