Is that really true? Are Harleys immune to such laws?
Bikes should be loud so drivers can be more aware of them.

Sorry to hear about the ticket though. I've had my share of them in the past. Its part of that saying, "you gotta pay to play". Tickets for loud exhaust are just part of the experience of owning an aftermarket exhaust. Some are lucky and get away with it, but they'll get you eventually.

no they are not immune. they are subject to the same exhaust requirements as cars. in fact, harleys from the factory are VERY quiet. it's the owners and dealerships that add on the straight pipes, etc.
actually it's the design of the engine i believe. how it's layed out. that's why they make loud noises.

if i had a harley i'd do the same so someone doesn run me over.
anyway in NY, the law is you cant have aftermarket exhaust or exhaust that is louder than oem.
i remember hearing g35 owners getting pulled over. stupid cops. and rx330 for clear tail lights. and evo for blue headlights. it goes on and on

maybe you can tell them next time you bought used and it came with it. pretty sure it's stock exhaust.

If that's true, then crotch rockets should have straight pipes too.

Frankly cops mostly pull over imports with aftermarket exhaust. The Harleys and domestics usually aren't bothered. Same with front plates. Vette's and Camaros get a pass, we don't.

My gf has an Invidia and has had it for a couple of years, never had any problems w/ the police
I say it's pretty much up to the cop, either they're a-holes or really nice(fix it ticket)

Actually, it varys from state to state. Here in FL motorcycles have a higher db tolerance then cars do. It is complete crap because most motorcycle exhausts exceed the set limits FAR more than those of automobiles.

What also total bullshit is the number of pick-up trucks that are running with aftermarket exhausts and probably NEVER get ticketed.

Here in Florida ANY modification which increases the volume of the vehicle at all is illegal (that means essentially every aftermarket exhaust/muffler). I got a ticket back in November for my Magnaflow exhaust on my RSX. It made me mad as all hell but there was nothing I could do about it.

not until AFTER they change the exhaust. I live by the harley capital of the world, milwaukee, WI, and have been to one of the harley factories plenty of times. (after all, there's one 5 minutes from my house)

trust me, the bikes come as quiet as a mouse from the factory. in fact, all you can hear is engine. every harley comes that way. but not until they throw on the exhaust or straight pipes, etc, do they get that loud ass sound you hear.

I don't agree. I have been riding for 20 years. All Hondas, with quiet factory exhaust. It's up to the rider to be aware of his/her surroundings. I don't place myself in a driver's blind spot. I ride defensively and find the quiet exhaust actually helps me hear what is going on around me. Besides, the ride is much more enjoyable when you still have your hearing when you get to your destination!

Just a few questions

1) If i get pulled over again for the same violation, will they suspend my license? ( i know it varies from state 2 state)
2.) If you have Invidia have you been pulled over before with the silencer on it?
3.) Who wants to trade their stock exhaust ?
No, they'll just keep issuing you tickets. After a few times they might towe your car. It happened to one of my friend, different car though.

I don't have Invidia, but one of my friend does and he has been ticketed before. He put a silencer on it after the ticket. If you have that exhaust expect to get a ticket. It is too loud. I can hear somebody coming a mile away with that thing.

HKS is not loud, matter as fact you won't hear it till somebody rev it up. And yes, I do live in Va.

It is pretty stupid that Harleys don't get hassle for their exhaust. This weekend, they'll be the Rolling Thunder coming through D.C. Let see how many of those guys get a ticket.

NYS Motorcycle muffler law:

http://home.ama-cycle.org/amaccess/l...t.asp?state=ny
Muffler required; no straight pipes; no removal of baffles; no modification of exhaust system that increases noise beyond exhaust system originally installed. Ref: NYS Vehicle & Traffic Law, Article 9, Section 381

NYS Auto Muffler law:

http://public.leginfo.state.ny.us/menugetf.cgi
Basically says no modification of exhaust system that increases noise beyond exhaust system originally installed. Go to section 31 to read full description.
