Damn, I thought internal combustion engines were supposed to stay internal! So was any paint burnt in that time, or will it be a relitavely easy fix for Honda. That sucks really bad, sorry to hear about that.

I'm not gonna give too many comments until this is all taken care of. But i'll tell you, the car does a good job of keeping the fire where it is.

Tips for people...

Yeah, now that I hear a good, logical explanation, it sounds much more likely than cooked internals...

On one of our groupdrives last summer, an S2000 in the group also caught fire. Luckily, we pulled him over and it didn't amount to much. Whoever serviced the car last (oil change, I think) or whoever checked the oil level last, left a rag in the engine bay. On the drive the rag got blown into the exhaust manifold and eventually ignited. Since it was in an area that normal gets very hot, no apparent damage was done. I can see if it were a large rag, the fire could have been more wide spread and gotten into areas that may have melted rubber and plastics from the heat.

Something similar was discussed before and it was mentioned that oil itself cannot ignite, but oil under pressure can. A little oil on the engine bay spilled while filling it up wouldn't cause a fire, but oil from inside the motor could be ignited. Just a thought for figuring out where to point the finger.
