Man that sucks, hope your engine is ok. My CBR900 has all the oils locked with safety springs. Hose clamp around the base of the filter, with a light pressure return spring to keep it pulled tight. Same for the drain plug, and fill cap/dipstick. looks trick, never fails. After reading on the boards about the fill cap, oil filter, AND the dipstick coming loose on the S, I'll be sure to do up my new S the same way.

That really sucks. Good luck with the repairs.

I remember the thread that Wesmaster is talking about. Something similar did happen to another car. Maybe you can search for it to get an idea of what happened.

My vote is oil spray from the filter on to the header.

As far as oil not burning, do you know gas doesn't burn? I've seen folks drop lit matches into buckets full of gas (for you jacka$$ fans, don't try this at home) and the match is snuffed out. It's actually the fumes that ignite.

Super heated oil on the exhaust manifold has caused many car fires. My guess is the fumes ignite first.

Sorry to hear about the fire. I hope Honda covers it and makes it right again.

I've always carried a fairly large CO2 extingquisher in my cars. Never used it on my own, but had a hand in putting out fires in other cars on several occasions. Every time I see a car afire, it makes me glad that I have an extinguisher in the trunk.

I've seen this 'trick' performed with diesel fuel, but I think you're mistaken about gasoline.
