Default Need advice on clutch and fly wheel!

After only 3800 miles my clutch is about dead. After reading everyone's past posts I have decided to get the ACT clutch. I am a bit nervous about going to a place other than a dealership to have it installed, what do you guys think? My local dealership quoted me about $1000 for the ACT clutch, installed. They also recommended that I have them put in a new fly wheel at the same time for about $600. Are the benefits of a better flywheel worth the cash?

First of all you should know that there are 2 main components to the clutch, the disk and the pressure plate. The disk is about $150-$180 and the pressure plate about $500. So your dealer may be offering you a good deal if they are doing both the disk and pressure plate. If they are just doing the disk it's not so hot. A lighter weight flywheel such as the one from Spoon, Toda or comptech will lower the mass the engine has to spin resulting in quicker engine revs both up, and because there is less mass, down. You are looking at about $450-500 for the flywheel.

Is it worth it? I think so and am having a Toda flywheel installed tomorrow. It should make rev matching a little smoother and provide more immediate response from the wheels to throttle inputs. It is likely that I'm not going to truely notice anything from this install but with labor running $600-$800 to open the transmission I figure I'd better do it now or never.

I'm quite surprised that your clutch is shot after only 4000 miles. Either it's defective, contaminated or your driving style requires some adjustment. You shouldn't have to change your clutch as often as your oil. Your clutch, if used properly, should last 10x that long.

While you're at it, might as well change what you don't like ... No doubt a decent flywheel and clutch kit will be better than the OEM one. Nevertheless, it's up to you to decide whether paying for the extras are worth it.

Check out Krazik's thread: Comptech Flywheel and Lightened Star Clutch Being Installed.

The ACT Clutch, well its a stock OEM clutch - no difference at all. The ACT Pressure Plate, its a reworked OEM unit. The Star clutch disks are either reworked or new units depending on the levels you want to get. Their pressure plates are a reworked unit as well, but how they rework them, I like so much better - and a lightweight version which shaves a few more pounds off. I can't wait to try Krazik's car while I'm out there - if he'll let me. =D

Let me know if you have any questions.
