Default need help with out of state purchase/return to NY

Hi,
I know a few of you have bought your cars out of state.
I may be trading a car in at a dealership in Ohio. I have a few questions about registering it when I get back to NY.

The dealer will give me temporary tags.
It will take about 2 weeks before they mail the title.
I can not register the car without the title, correct?
Can I legally drive the car in NY state with the temporary tags from another state?
How do I go about getting a NY state title?
Question about sales tax: When you trade a car in in new york state you only pay sales tax on the difference in price, not the full amount of the new car. What if I buy the car out of state? Will I pay tax on the difference or the full amount of the new car.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Mark

you need the title to register it yes.

you are fine to drive with the temp tag. you will sign a temp registration paper with the dealer so that your legal.

you will have to go to the dmv to register it, or a tag and title place, where you can pay the sales tax and registrstion fees for NY.

if you are not financing the car at the dealer your buying the car from then they do not have to worry about finding out sales tax, etc for you. they just leave that for you to worry about. so to answer your question once you register it, you will pay all the applicable NY fees, not ohio's.

the reason i know this is b/c i am the internet guy at a dealer ship. so i work with it everyday. we had some folks fly in to bwi from nashville to get a 03 thunderbird. they gave us a check for the car plus the 30 bucks for the temp tag, and that was it. so they drove the car to nashville and had to worry about the tax, etc. when they got back. just as if they would have bought it in TN where they live.

pretty easy process! hope this helps

Mark - a couple of your questions can be answered at the NYS DMV site:
http://www.nysdmv.com/register.htm

Just curious - if it's a new car why does the dealer need two weeks to give you title? The car arrives with an MCO - Manufacturers Certificate of Origin which can be used to get a NYS title.

THis is another concern I have that I forgot to mention.
This is a Honda dealership. I asked the same question about why 2 weeks for the title. They mentioned the car could have a lien on it?
Do they not own this car out right?
Is it safe to buy a car from a Honda dealer without a clear title?
Need help!

Mark - is the car new? If it's new then it should have the MCO. If it is used then it very well may have just been traded in with a lien on the title. They may need the two weeks to request a clear title without the lien.
While your at it - if we are talking about a used car run a Carfax on the VIN. There are frequently people on the board here that have the unlimited monthly account and will run it for you.
