The engine does have some similarities, its the same small size and uses the reinforced ladder. Theres an article on
Temple of Vtec, an interview with the designers where they specify the differences between the two engines and also the two cars.

The S2000 is hand made small production whereas the ITR will be mass production. Its an interesting article and well worth a look.

It'll be interesting to see wether or not the RSX Type R will be mass produced or not. All though I'm sure the RSX base and the Type S will be mass produced, there's no guarantee that the R will be. The current ITR is limited in production due to the hand built nature of its motor needed to produce it's high power/rpm. From all accounts, it seems that DOHC i-VTEC engines will be able to produce similar high outputs without all the porting etc that was needed in the current Type R class B series engines.

Those two cars are the same for you, Aus2K. We are waiting 'Stateside. BTW, MOTOR has a "first drive" of the ITR featured in this month's issue - at least that's what is on their website.

Scan it for us!

Well, i hope these file sizes aren't too big........

some good pics though.....

First, some quotes and sections from the article:

KICKIN' Rs

Honda's test track, based on the legendary Nurbugring is 6.2km of more than a dozen blind corners and weaves and climbs 57meters through a forest. It's 43 twists and turns provide for a searching rxamination of a cars dynamic abilities.......

Honda insisted that MOTOR called the Integra TypeR the Integra Type R Prototype

Modifications will be made b4 production starts....

the New ITR is a major improvement over the old.....

"Very few manufacturers can totally redefine one of their hottest models and get it so right"

It' a blast, and also much quicker package over any piece of tarmac (road, asphalt, etc for americans )

It averages nearly 120km/h on it's way to a lap of jut over 3min, this can justifiably be considered phenominal.

It's cuts more than 4sec of the old ITR on the same track (Takasu)

it has a 60mm higher roofline

The Exterior is penned to appeal to the US market (Acura RSX), it suposedly follows trends from BMW, Audi and Ferrari...

"Honda's have, up and till now been too thin"

MOTOR's test driver said that it dawed on him when he hopped in it dawned on him the real reason for having a higher roofline, it was to enable drivers to wear helmets..hehe

The VTEC System copes a dose of S2000 technology with rocker arms following the camshaft lobes with big rollers to cut down friction. (VTEC Still kicks in @ 6000rpm)

perfectly square 86mm bore and stroke (resulting in a slightly shorter stroke than the 1.8)

It has domed pistons and 11:1 comp. ratio with 162kW @ 8000rpm (up15kW)

it has 206Nm @ 7000rpm (up 20Nm)

Power and torque curves are noticable flatter......

8400rpm redline.....

Acceleration couldn't be measured, but a 14.3 sec 0-400m sprint is nearly a second quicker the the outgoing model....

But it's o the track where the new ITR shines........

You only need to change gears a few times to realise honda's onto something special here.....

The new 6speed gear-box is precise, beautifully weighted and has wonderfully short throws...(that's what made me think about our GearBox...)

The rod shifter has been ditched in favor of a cable arrangement, anyone know whether the s2k has this or even what it is?

It also says many have tried this in the past(a cable arrangement), but it took Soichiro;s boys to get it right...

Power is kept in check by (shock horror for honda traditionalists) a MacPherson strut, coil sprung front end, although the doubl. wishbone front end is retained.

A Helical LSD Front end (same as old ITR)

You can take corners on average 15-20km/h faster than in the old model.....

The tail all but refuses to go walkabout, except when severely provoked.....if it does kickout though, it only takes a hint of oppy lock and it's all back on track.......

The steering is sharp and as precise and neutral as you're ever likely to find on a front wheel drive car....

it's deadly accurate at just about any speed

It has less understeer than the previous model.....

The improved rigity, larger engine, gearbox, and more metal add 75Kg to the overall kerb weight...... all the pros counteract this though....

You can expect to pay another couple of grand though when it comes out in October.......(australia)

"it's not the raw, balls-and-all racecar for the road it used to be, but the new found refinement doesn't come at the cost of fun behind the wheel..."

Picture will be in new post once i upload them.......

hope this was good enough for all of ya.......

Damn that was a loooong post, hope you foundsomething out you didn't know b4, actually i decided to post that much for one of my computing classes at school, for an assesment I have to type @50wpm touch-typing, i'm almost there though.

anyway, be warned the pics are large in size (about 200k, one 700k) due to the quality i scanned them @, (300dpi....) and after finding the file size i couldn't be bothered rescanning and cropping the pics ok

so here they are, enjoy:

Specs[table] 161k

5reasons to buy 112k

ITR Cornering, front bonnet chopped off due to page fold 791k

Side view of ITR Coupe 450k

The front dash, very nice...... 140k

Thanks, Aus2k. I assume that you'll be driving one pretty soon. Please fill us in once you've properly broken her in.

Well, rumor is that it'll be here in 2003. I've "deposited" $100 for the first one in Michigan. If you can convince your parents to assist in this fine FWD acquisition and arrange shipping I'll sell you my yellow '00!

Make it a '05 goal and she'll be yours. Hell, there are DC2311's [current ITR] that will be sold for the WRX STi and the "RS-X" Type R. I think you'll be fine.
