Learn about possible valve retainer problems. Think about checking them and replacing them.
Is there a way to find this out without physically looking at them (diag tests or anything)? I wanted to check on this specific point before purchasing a car but Honda said it would be very pricey and the car would need to be left for 2 days
That's because they don't know what they are doing. Become a competent S2000 mechanic.

Well, I figure he'd buy one first, but yes, that's a better idea.

Lol. I was going to add that when I asked if they had a mechanic that had good knowledge of an s2000 he says yes with no hesitation, so I asked to talk to him. The "mechanic" said "yeah I can find out how to check that and we can call you back with a price quote" <-- wow, that's mainly why I brought the question to the forum.
I know how to physically check them myself but doubt anyone will let me start tearing their car apart before I purchase it, looks like I just have to buy one and hope there are no problems until I get home to check?

It's not too hard to check. There are numerous posts on how to do it.

Make sure you have a PPI done by someone you trust, make sure it's insured before you take your first drive, and make sure you hit 9000 RPM with the top down.

Then do what everyone else said

Already mentioned above but, like any other car, change all fluids of unknown status. Drive it and enjoy it. Track/autocross it.

After checking all the fliuds, brakes, tires and etc. I said the same thing about keeping the Black Mamba stock LOL, Drop it, new single exhaust and intake. I am not even close to stopping with the mods on my car. Start thinking about what modifiication you are going to do with the S2000. Then start a spread sheet on what is first, price and specs on each mod. Second just go out and drive the S2000 and enjoy that great car from Honda. Welcome to our world man. Later BD
